MANILA — The Philippine National Police said there are no threats received for the conduct of the country’s hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) this year, where global leaders are expected to converge for high-level summits.Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said they have been preparing for a year to ensure the security of the event.“As of now, upon our coordination, hindi lang po ang Philippine National Police, uulitin ko other law enforcement units, even the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard and our community, wala po tayong nakukuha or nakalap na threats with regard to the conduct of ASEAN,” he said in a Palace press briefing Wednesday, January 14.“So in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, the Armed Forces of the Philippines and, of course, nandiyan din ang ating local government units, we are ready now to implement or go with our security operations for ASEAN,” he added.For its part, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said there has been coordination with the PNP as it stands ready to assist in the security operations.“Sa aspeto po kasi ng safety and security, peace and order, lagi pong ang bida diyan ang PNP. Ang AFP po ay nagbibigay lang po ng suporta,” AFP Deputy Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Rommel Roldan said.“Nabigyan na po ng marching orders ang inyong kasundaluhan na ibigay ang kailangang suporta ng ating kapulisan as far as the security aspect of the ASEAN related activities for this year na tayo po ang host,” he added.Nartatez also confirmed that ASEAN lanes for VIPs will be designated in Manila, similar to what was implemented during the country’s ASEAN hosting in 2017.The 48th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will be held in Mactan, Cebu, on May 8 and 9.While the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits—where world leaders outside Southeast Asia are also expected to attend—will take place at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila on November 10 to 12, 2026.
