<p>MANILA -- Amid what appeared to be a sea of devotees at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo, Edward Namit, a stroke patient, stood quietly in prayer, leaning on a walking cane.</p><p>He joined the faithful on Wednesday for the traditional pabihis, or changing of garments, of the revered image of Jesus Nazarene.</p><p>Namit went to the church alone to witness the ritual and to give thanks, saying his faith has saved him countless times throughout his life. </p><p>“Nabundol ako. Nanginginig na nga ang tuhod ko pero okay lang. Dahil sa kanya, kaya ko. Sabi nong iba, nakakapunta ka pa sa Quiapo? Oo naman, sabi ko. Fr. Robert Arellano, spokesperson for Nazareno 2026, the ritual is done not only for the feast but also as part of regular church practice.</p><p>“Number one, for cleanliness purposes, for hygiene. Dahil maraming humihipo, maraming humahalik dito… Yes, hindi lang po ito ginagawa dahil sa kapistahan. Kung hindi normal na gawain sa loob ng simbahan ang tinatawag nating pabihis,” he said. </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>FINAL REMINDERS</strong></div><div><strong><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1767794107760G-DhpSCaoAAEhxL.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960" alt="Jessie Cruzat, ABS-CBN News"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left"><em>Jessie Cruzat, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></strong></div><p>As the feast day of Jesus Nazareno approaches, both church and government officials have issued final reminders to devotees who will join the annual Traslacion.</p><p>Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced that vendors will not be allowed to set up stalls around Quiapo Church and along the Traslacion route.</p><div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/5/-all-systems-go-preparations-in-full-swing-for-nazareno-2026-2219"><strong>‘All systems go’: Preparations in full swing for Nazareno 2026 </strong></a> </div><p>He also warned against drinking alcohol and selling or using fireworks.</p><p>“Wala pong mag-iinom sa kalsada. Wala pong gagamit ng paputok at magtitinda ng paputok. Kukumpiskahin po namin lahat yan… Kung gusto po nating magsaya, wala pong aawat. Pero meron po tayong takdang responsibilidad sa ating sarili, sa ating kapwa, at sa ating kapwa mamamayan,” Moreno said.</p><p>The mayor also appealed to vendors to clean sharp sticks used in their goods to prevent injuries to barefoot devotees.</p><p>The Manila local government conducted flushing operations along streets surrounding the church and repainted concrete structures and arches along Villalobos and R. Hidalgo Streets in preparation for the procession. </p><p>The church, meanwhile, urged parents to closely guide their children and to prevent them from climbing the andas, or carriage of the image.</p><p>Church records show that many of those injured during past Traslacion events were minors. </p><p>“Pwede po tayong humila ng lubid. Pwedeng sumalya. Pwedeng magwagayway ng panyo at tuwalya. Pwedeng mangandila, pwedeng manalangin. Huwag na lamang po sanang sumampa sa Andas,” said Alex Irasga, technical advisor of the basilica.</p><p>Rev. Fr. Ramon Jade Licuanan, rector and parish priest of the shrine, emphasized the message of the celebration. </p><p>“We would like with this theme, this celebration, na makita ng mga deboto ng bawat katoliko na pagiging mabuting Katoliko ay pagiging mabuting Pilipino. We would like, ito yung wish natin talaga for the longest time. Maiugnay natin yung pananampalataya natin sa pagiging Pilipino,” he said.</p><p>Police authorities reiterated calls for discipline, noting that devotion must go hand in hand with order and safety.</p><p>“Noong nakaraang taon po, may nagpumilit at nakalusot doon sa Ayala Bridge, iiwasan po natin na mangyari ngayon yan. I-guide natin sila na ma-clear pa rin ‘yong Ayala Bridge kung saan kung maiipon diyan ang napakaraming deboto, diyan po tatagal ang procession natin,” said PCOL. Emil Tumibay, deputy director for operations of the Manila Police District. </p><p>Hospitals in Manila have been placed under Code White Alert, meaning emergency rooms are on standby with additional medical personnel and supplies.</p><div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/7/devotees-line-up-for-pahalik-days-ahead-of-traslacion-2026-1905"><strong>Devotees line up for ‘Pahalik’ days ahead of Traslacion 2026</strong></a></div><p>The Department of Health will deploy 20 Health Emergency Response Teams along the Traslacion route, along with 17 first aid stations, ambulances, and volunteer first aiders from the Philippine Red Cross and other groups. </p><p>DOH Assistant Secretary Gloria Balboa advised vulnerable sectors to avoid the crowded event as a preventive measure.</p><p>“Pero sana ‘yong mga may sakit na na may chronic diseases, mga immunocompromised, ‘yong ating mga elderlies, ‘yong mga bata, buntis, sana wag na pumunta kasi crowded area nga…Pang-preventive measure lang po sana ‘yon, at ayaw nating makadagdag sa ating mga aasikasuhin,” she said. </p><p>The agency also reminded devotees to bring drinking water to prevent dehydration as they take part in one of the country’s largest religious gatherings.</p>
