A rehabilitation of the major thoroughfare is set for June 13. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — A total of 162 vehicles, including ambulances, were apprehended for illegally using the EDSA Busway from January to February 2026, according to data from the Land Transportation Office.</p><p>The agency said six of the apprehended vehicles were ambulances that were not responding to emergencies at the time they were flagged down.</p><p>Ambulances are only allowed to enter the exclusive bus lane if they are responding to legitimate emergency situations, particularly life-and-death cases, the Department of Transportation said.</p><p>Rayson Dela Torre, who heads the transport agency&#x27;s special action and intelligence team, said only EDSA Carousel buses, vehicles with protocol plates 1 to 5, and emergency vehicles responding to actual emergencies are authorized to use the busway. Law enforcement vehicles are also allowed access.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/1/30/palace-lukewarm-to-open-edsa-busway-to-other-vehicles-1631">Palace lukewarm to open EDSA busway to other vehicles</a></div><p>The agency warned that unauthorized use of the bus lane poses serious safety risks.</p><p>&quot;May mga bus po diyan na maaaring di po sila mapansin o di po agad makapagpreno. Kung sakaling sila po ay biglang pumasok sa bus lane maaari pong magkaroon ng aksidente,&quot; Dela Torre said.</p><p>LTO Executive Director Martin Ontog said ambulances without proper dispatch documents issued by hospitals and private vehicles entering the busway face a P1,000 fine.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>DEMERIT POINTS</strong></div><div><br/></div><p>Erring drivers also incur demerit points under the agency&#x27;s point system and revocation of their license is possible.</p><p>&quot;For private vehicles, may tig-5 demerit points, so that will be deducted from their total 40 points. For PUVs naman, I think 10 points ang demerit nila,&quot; he said.</p><p>&quot;So if they incurred a total of 10 demerit points, meron na kaagad &#x27;yun katumbas na seminar.
