MANILA -- Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered a manhunt against the gunmen behind an ambush in General Santos City that left two people dead.The fatalities were identified as Nhiezer Rolliene Jane Aguacito, a nurse and reportedly the wife of the nephew of Malapatan, Sarangani Mayor Salway Sumbo Jr., and Iven Conde, a tricycle driver.Based on initial police investigation, Aguacito was on board a tricycle driven by Conde when unidentified gunmen opened fire along Aparente corner Salvani Streets in Barangay City Heights on February 2.Investigators said Aguacito was not the intended target and was hit by stray bullets while she was on her way home after buying groceries.“I have already directed the Regional Director, Police Regional Office-12, to run after all those involved and hold them accountable for what they did. We will leave no stone unturned in the conduct of investigation against those responsible,” Nartatez said in a statement.Mayor Sumbo earlier appealed to authorities to swiftly identify and arrest the suspects.“Hinihikayat ko ang lahat na maging mahinahon at hayaan ang PNP na gawin ang aming trabaho. Be rest assured, justice will be served and we will act swiftly to apprehend the suspects,” the PNP chief added.Following the incident, police visibility and patrols in identified high-risk areas in General Santos City have been intensified.The PNP also said it is maintaining constant coordination with Mayor Sumbo and other Sarangani local officials to ensure a unified and effective response.Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and to identify the intended target of the ambush.
