<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17725282225572-Composite (3).jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/>Former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte. ABS-CBN News/File</div>THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Former President Rodrigo Duterte is proud of Vice President Sara Duterte’s decision to vie for the presidency in the 2028 national elections, but also cautions against the “misery and agony” that comes with the position, his youngest daughter Veronica Duterte said on Monday.About a week before Duterte’s confirmation of charges hearing in the ICC, his vice president-daughter <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/2/18/sara-duterte-to-run-for-president-1102">announced</a> that she will be competing in the 2028 presidential race to correct her mistake of endorsing President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the post in 2022.“Sabi niya (Duterte) although he is beaming with pride hearing that, he also feels for her talaga,” Veronica said in a chance interview.“He said na no amount of adulation and honor could ever compensate for the misery and agony of being president,” she said.“He said, ‘Look at me now, ito yung trono ko,’ pertaining to the chair beside him,” she added.The Duterte patriarch has been detained in the Hague since March 2025 after he was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and flown to the Netherlands to face charges of crimes against humanity linked to the thousands of deaths during his administration’s drug war.Despite the former president’s statement about his daughther’s political plan, Veronica said that their entire family remains “very proud.”“There is this fear inkling for her. Of course, she has children who are bata pa,” she said.“That makes all of us a target but alam namin na kaya niya. Siya pa ba? Alam niyo yung ugali ni VP Sara. Mas matapang pa yan sa tatay namin at saka fighter talaga,” she said.“Papa raised us to be that way, all of us.”While several parties have already expressed interest in running along side Sara Duterte in 2 years, the Vice President has yet to announce who she intends to tap as her second in command in the 2028 national elections.
