MANILA — Maternity kits are now included in the relief items the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will give to evacuees.On Wednesday, the department, led by Secretary Rex Gatchalian, rolled out the first set of maternity kits and gave these to pregnant and lactating mothers who are staying in the evacuation center at the Manila Seedling Compound in Quezon City. These residents lost their homes along NIA Road due to a fire last March 6. <div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/3/14/hundreds-of-families-still-in-evacuation-sites-after-massive-fire-in-pinyahan-quezon-city-2301">READ: Hundreds of families still in evacuation sites after massive fire in Pinyahan, Quezon City</a></div>“Ang utos kasi ng ating Pangulo, Pangulong BBM, siguraduhin ng DSWD na napangangalagaan ang lahat ng evacuees lalong-lalo na yung mga vulnerable at kasama diyan yung mga ina na nagbubuntis, nagpapasuso, yung kakapanganak lang at ang kanilang mga anak,” Gatchalian told reporters. “Kaya ngayon, ni-roll out natin yung kauna-unahang set ng maternity kits. Itong maternity kit, lahat ng puwedeng kailanganin ng isang nagbubuntis or nagpapasuso o kapanganak lang na ina, nandoon na sa loob. It&#x27;s a complete kit. Kasi alam natin pag nagkaroon ng ganitong disaster, wala silang nadadala eh,” he added.  The kit has 21 items including a baby bag, mosquito net, breastfeeding scarf, baby clothes, and pillows.The DSWD chief called the maternity kit an innovation. “First time ito. It&#x27;s another innovation ng administrasyong Marcos Jr.,” said Gatchalian. “Sunog, baha, bulkan, or any type of evacuation. Kinakalat na namin ngayon sa mga field office namin para pag may mga natala silang nanay sa loob ng evacuation center eh meron tayong kit.” “Ang direktiba ng ating Pangulo is to evolve. Hindi puwede kung ano lang yung nadatnan namin yun na yun,” he added. “Kailangan ibalik natin yung dignidad sa bawat Pilipino, lalong-lalo na yung mga naging biktima.”Recipients of the maternity kit said they were grateful.“Malaking tulong po sa akin,” said Ritchel Batobato, an evacuee. “Sobrang hirap kasi po noong time na nasunungan ako talagang balat katawan lang kami ni baby tumakbo sa labas.”  The DSWD is also thinking of rolling out kits for senior citizens.
