MANILA — The Internal Affairs Service (IAS) of the Philippine National Police has launched an investigation into the deadly shootout in Barangay Irawan, Puerto Princesa, Palawan, that left two police officers and a Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) personnel dead.Initial reports said the violence stemmed from an earlier altercation between police officers and residents at a wake that was partially blocking a street.The officers were allegedly mauled by residents, prompting them to go to the police station for backup. The situation escalated into a fatal encounter.In a statement, the IAS said a joint probe is now underway with the PNP Special Investigation Team to examine possible lapses and violations of operational procedures.Among the potential violations are “that responding personnel were out of uniform, using private vehicles, and possibly under the influence of alcohol,” it said.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2026/4/6/four-police-officers-jailed-after-puerto-princesa-wake-shooting-1432">Four police officers jailed after Puerto Princesa wake shooting </a></div>PNP Inspector General Brigido Dulay, a lawyer, vowed a thorough and impartial investigation.“If there were abuses committed, they will be exposed, and those responsible will answer fully before the law,” Dulay said.Dulay added that PNP chief Police Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has made it clear that misconduct has no place in the police force and that the strongest sanctions will be recommended against any officer found to have violated their oath.The IAS confirmed the police personnel involved have been disarmed and placed under restrictive custody while administrative charges are being prepared.Investigators are also looking into possible command responsibility to determine whether supervisory lapses contributed to the incident.Meanwhile, the BuCor has asked the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct a reenactment of the incident that led to the death of Corrections Officer 1 Jerson Talon.BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr. made the request after Talon’s family presented a video and photos allegedly showing the officer pinned face down on the ground with his hands tied behind his back.“Given that both the victims and suspects are government personnel, BuCor emphasized that the Philippine National Police and the NBI’s involvement is crucial to ensure an impartial and thorough probe into the incident,” the bureau said.Catapang thanked Nartatez for the quick relief and suspension of police officers implicated in the incident but said Talon’s family is considering filing administrative and criminal complaints as well.Authorities said the case remains under close scrutiny as investigators work to uncover the truth and ensure justice for all parties involved.
