MANILA — The Association of General and Flag Officers (AGFO) on Monday expressed its support for Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.’s position opposing the resumption of national-level peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army – National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).In a letter addressed to Teodoro, AGFO Chaiman and President Retired Police Major General German Doria said the organization supports the government’s current strategy focused on localized peace engagements, amnesty, and reintegration efforts.“AGFO recognizes the government’s effort that focuses on localized peace engagements, amnesty, and reintegration while prioritizing the dismantling of remaining guerrilla fronts through local initiatives,” Doria said.The group added that it is “best for the CPP-NPA-NDF to join the legitimate political process.”The association, composed of retired generals and flag officers, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government and protecting democratic institutions.“The association reaffirms its continuing commitment to the Republic and its institutions, guided by the values and principle that the AGFO has always stood for,” Doria said.He went on, “We are prepared to provide the Department of National Defense (DND) with our collective expertise and institutional support to ensure the primacy of the rule of law and the dignity of our national sovereignty.”The AGFO also commended Teodoro for what it described as his “steadfast resolve” in efforts to end insurgency.“We congratulate Sec. Teodoro for his steadfast resolve in ending insurgency by blocking any attempt to resume peace talks at a time when the enemy [is] flat on the ground,” the group said. “This is political will displayed where it matters most.”Earlier this month, Teodoro said there would be no resumption of peace talks with communist rebels, rejecting calls from former negotiators following a military operation, which left 19 people dead in Toboso, Negros Occidental.The defense chief dismissed the proposal, saying the country is already at peace and that the insurgents are the ones disrupting it.
