However, it is always very encouraging to see when the two nations, such as China and the United States, can still come together and communicate with one another,” he said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/5/15/trump-says-made-fantastic-trade-deals-with-xi-but-details-scarce-2136">Trump says made &#x27;fantastic trade deals&#x27; with Xi, but details scarce</a></div><p>Dialogues between the US and China — rivals in terms of economic and military prowess — is a “good thing” for consumers, Marcos said.</p><p>“It&#x27;s very well to compete aggressively… It&#x27;s good for our consumers. It&#x27;s good for the strength of our economy. Innovation comes in,” he said.</p><p>“We compete vigorously, but we must cooperate whenever we possibly can, and that for me, is going to bring the synergy.”</p><p>Last year, Beijing and Washington were pitted in a trade war after Xi imposed tariffs against the United States in retaliation for Trump’s steep hike in taxes to balance the trade between his country and Asia’s largest economy.</p><p>The two countries have since paused their trade war, with Trump and Xi agreeing to a constructive &quot;strategic stability&quot; framework to guide bilateral relations for the next three years.</p><p>“It is encouraging to see that the two leaders got together. I think it was a very fruitful discussion, but we still have to see the details of what came out of it,” the Philippine President said.</p><p>“I understand that it is not a simple discussion. There are issues that are very complicated and very many, very many complicated issues that have to be discussed and that have to be agreed upon… But nonetheless, that is another encouraging sign for the rest of the world from both China and the United States,” he said.</p><p>The Philippines — under Marcos’ administration — has worked closely with the United States to ward off Chinese vessels from further encroaching on the West Philippine Sea as Beijing continues to illegally claim features in Manila’s exclusive economic zone.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/world/2026/5/14/subdued-trump-left-waiting-for-big-hug-from-xi-1906">Subdued Trump left waiting for &#x27;big hug&#x27; from Xi</a></div><p>Despite frictions between Manila and Beijing, Marcos has repeatedly emphasized that the Philippines chooses to settle disputes through peaceful means.</p><p>“As we all know, it does not matter how difficult the situation is, how large the conflict is, but if you stop talking, then immediately, there is no chance of success,” the Filipino leader said.</p><p>“That is why to see that there is continuing dialogue, there is continuing exchanges between China and the United States, that is very, very important for us.
