Gerville Luistro of Batangas Second District on Monday opposed the suggestion to amend the Senate Rules to authorize senators with &quot;justifiable&quot; reasons to participate in sessions and vote.</p><p>The proposal, put forward by Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, was made ahead of the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/1/nearly-3-in-4-filipinos-support-sara-duterte-impeachment-trial-octa-survey-0947">Senate impeachment trial </a>of Vice President Sara Duterte.</p><p>Luistro, the lead prosecutor in the impeachment case of Duterte, said she has always rejected proposals to allow online participation in the impeachment process, which she considers as &quot;sacred&quot; and &quot;solemn.&quot;</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/5/27/hontiveros-senate-walkout-1148">&#x27;Masamang Senateflix&#x27;: Hontiveros questions alleged rush to amend Senate Rules</a></div><p>&quot;This is a power that is given to the sovereign Filipino people, which we are exercising us as prosecutors and the senators as the judges to this impeachment trial,&quot; she told ANC.</p><p>&quot;I hope they will be sensitive as well to the sentiments of the Filipino people.&quot;</p><p>Marcoleta&#x27;s proposal allowing his colleagues to participate remotely in sessions is seen to accommodate Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa, who now faces potential arrest over his crimes against humanity case before the International Criminal Court. </p><p>Dela Rosa returned to hiding after casting a crucial vote on May 11 that installed Sen. Bato risked his liberty in voting for the change of leadership, he has to show more courage now because this impeachment trial is responding to a constitutional mandate,&quot; Luistro said. </p><p>The majority bloc <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/5/26/minority-senators-walk-out-after-clash-on-electronic-voting-rule-discussion-1956">failed to put to a vote </a>the proposed amendment to the Senate Rules last week following a walkout by minority senators.
