Michael Delizo, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA — A rip current in Dipaculao, Aurora that led to the deaths of Ateneo ballers Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili last Monday carried two other players away, the Aurora Police Provincial Office said. Unlike Baterbonia and Adili, the two other players survived the ordeal, said acting provincial director Police Col. Percival Pineda in a statement on Thursday.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/11/nbi-reviewing-no-foul-play-finding-in-baterbonia-adili-deaths-1312">NBI reviewing ‘no foul play’ finding in Baterbonia, Adili deaths </a> </div>Citing an initial investigation by the Dipaculao Municipal Police Stattion, Pineda said strong waves carried four players away.&quot;Dalawa ang nakaligtas at nakabalik sa pampang, habang dalawa ang nalunod. Agad na rumesponde ang lifequard ng resort, MDRRMO Dipaculao, at mga pulis ng Dipaculao MPS,&quot; said Pineda.(Two managed to return to shore and two drowned. The resort lifeguard, municipal disater office and Dipaculao MPS personnel immediately responded to the incident.)Pineda also said that based on testimonies by lifeguards and responders there were no weights on the dead players&#x27; bodies. &quot;Walang nakitang tali o anumang bagay na nakakabit sa mga paa ng mga biktima, taliwas sa ilang kumakalat na impormasyon,&quot; he said.(There were no ropes or any other objects attached to the victims&#x27; feet, contrary to information that has been spreading.)He said authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to complete the investigation. Pineda said the Aurora police are also coordinating with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the National Bureau of Investigation to determine liability in the incident.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/6/9/pnp-aurora-says-no-foul-play-in-drowning-of-ateneo-s-adili-baterbonia-1238">PNP Aurora says no foul play in drowning of Ateneo&#x27;s Adili, Baterbonia </a> </div>The NBI earlier said that it is looking at “all angles” in the drowning incident that killed the two players. It is also reviewing initial findings that there was no foul play in their deaths.The NBI said a “no foul play” finding only “speaks to the absence of intentional harm” but it does not answer whether these deaths resulted from negligence in the conduct of the activity.
