UAAP Season 86 Media Team handout/File</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin and three other officials of its basketball team skipped a Monday hearing by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in connection with the deaths of athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity.</p><p>Only the director of the University Athletics Office showed up for the hearing. </p><p>Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said another subpoena would be sent to the management of the basketball team for a hearing on Friday. </p><p>Authorities plan to summon the team’s players in a separate hearing.    </p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F2018156305457884%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="314" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></div><p>“We are not here to arrest, we are not here to charge, but merely gather the facts,” Remulla said earlier in the day. </p><p>“It is a fact-finding mission; hindi siya fault-finding. Kasama ba doon ang off campus?” Acting Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino told DZMM. “Sa Region 3 na po ito (training) nangyari.” </p><p>Labor law violations could lead to revocation of AEPs and eventual deportation, he noted. </p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ktZZh67HdyA?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div><p>The labor department will also summon Ateneo representatives. </p><p>“Susunod po ‘yon, mayroon din pong liability ‘yun,” Tolentino said, noting that two Supreme Court decisions have ruled that school authorities have special parental duty over students as they are entrusted with learners’ care. </p><p>Tolentino said investigators would also look into possible violations of the anti-hazing law. </p><p>“May pangatlong mas mabigat-bigat, mati-trigger dito yung anti-hazing law kasi kung extraordinary na yung physical regimen, training, ay pumapasok po doon,” Tolentino said. </p><p>“Nagli-link-link na po ‘yan, pero ayaw natin pangunahan ‘yan kasi lahat naman presumed innocent lahat dito,” he added. </p><p>Ateneo de Manila University earlier said <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/6/11/-no-weights-used-in-conditioning-exercise-in-knee-deep-water-says-ateneo-1622">“no weights of any kind were used”</a>during the “knee-deep exercise near the shoreline in Dipaculao, Aurora.
