MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is eyeing the relocation of around 500 to 1,000 families living along waterways in Las Piñas and Parañaque as part of the government’s flood mitigation efforts this rainy season.During an inspection of Tuntong Creek on Thursday, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said informal settler families occupying portions of the creek have become a major obstacle to drainage projects in the area.“Meron tayong ginawang project dito, tapos na. Pero ang problema, kahit pinalaki natin yung drainage, ang labasan ng tubig ay dito. And obviously mapupuno kaagad yung creek dahil nakapatong na yung mga bahay sa creek mismo,” he said.Dizon said the national government will coordinate with the local governments of Las Piñas and Parañaque, as well as the National Housing Authority, for the relocation.He noted that they will look for relocation sites before beginning any transfer process or demolition of structures.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/16/ombudsman-209-flood-control-complaints-under-fact-finding-investigation-1436">Ombudsman: 209 flood control complaints under fact-finding investigation </a></div>“Sa lalong madaling panahon, kailangan nating i-relocate itong mga kababayan natin na andito. We just have to exercise political will… Para sa sarili na rin nilang safety tsaka kapakanan (kasi) delikado po talaga na nakapatong sila sa daanan ng tubig,” he added.Las Piñas Mayor April Aguilar-Nery backed the plan, saying relocation would help address long-standing flooding in the area.“Para once and for all, maayos na natin itong lugar na ’to kasi it’s always been a source of baha talaga at laging lumulubog, kagaya ng Barangay Manuyo Dos,” she said.Some residents said they understand the need for relocation, adding that they have also experienced recurring floods in the area.However, they said they hope to be transferred to areas with adequate housing, basic services, and access to livelihood opportunities.“Yung maayos naman. Pagdating namin doon, maayos ang tirahan, maayos ang tubig, ilaw, at sana may trabaho. Kasi kung andito pa rin ang trabaho, ang tao, babalik pa rin,” said Oscar Balaza, who has lived near Tuntong Creek since the 1980s.Dizon assured residents they would be taken care of.“Aalagaan po natin sila, hindi natin sila papabayaan. We will provide yung tamang compensation sa kanila, tutulungan natin sila, bibigyan natin sila ng financial assistance. At the same time, bibigyan natin sila ng maayos na relocation,” he said.
