LAS PIÑAS CITY – Water concessionaire Maynilad has promised assistance to the families of two construction workers who died following a trench collapse at its conveyance system project in Barangay Pamplona Dos. In a statement, Maynilad said it is coordinating with its contractor to ensure that support and assistance will be extended to the families of the victims.“Maynilad is coordinating with the contractor to ensure assistance and support for the affected families. Work at the site remains suspended while the incident is under investigation,” the company said.Work at the construction site has been suspended pending an investigation.The incident occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, when a portion of an excavation site reportedly collapsed, burying the workers. Dinala namin sa Christ the King Hospital ‘yung isang tao. Okay naman, hindi naman daw serious kaya iniwan na lang namin doon,” Villalon said.Las Piñas City lone district Rep. Mark Anthony Santos, who inspected the site on Monday, called on contractors to ensure stricter safety compliance in infrastructure projects.He noted the depth of the excavation, which he said reached nearly 18 meters, and stressed the need to prioritize worker safety.“Medyo malalim ‘yung hukay nito—almost 18 meters ito—so nagkaroon ng sakuna. Dapat lalong maging mas maingat ang mga contractor… Hindi natin puwedeng isacrifice yung safety dito,” Santos said, adding that the contractor involved is reportedly a large foreign firm.The affected site is part of Maynilad’s Las Piñas Conveyance System Package 2, a wastewater infrastructure project involving conveyance lines, manholes, and pumping facilities intended to transport wastewater to the Las Piñas Water Reclamation Facility.Maynilad said the project was issued a Notice to Proceed on October 3, 2023, and is proceeding within its approved implementation schedule.In an earlier statement, the company expressed condolences to the families of the victims.“We extend our deepest sympathies to their families, friends, and colleagues. We are coordinating closely with our contractor to ensure that the affected families receive immediate assistance and support during this difficult time.
