Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News/File</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The Department of Education on Friday encouraged learners and parents to attend the first day of classes on June 8, underscoring its importance on learners’ education journey.</p><p>“Nalaman po namin na ang mga mag-aaral po natin pala ay bumubuwelo pa kapag nagsimula na ang taon. Ang gusto po nating sabihin, pumasok kayo agad! The first few days in a school year are very important. So, go to school on Day 1. Day 1 is very important,” Education undersecretary for Learning Systems Strand Dr. Carmela Oracion said. </p><p>“That’s where you get to be oriented, that’s where you get to know your classmates – that’s very, very important so sana po pumasok lahat,” she said in an interview with state-run media PTV.</p><p>She said public schools across the country were ready for the opening of classes next week.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/2/deped-hopeful-three-term-school-calendar-will-yield-better-learning-outcomes-1342"><strong>DepEd ‘hopeful’ three-term school calendar will yield better learning outcomes</strong></a></div><p>“Noon pa lang nagsara ang klase, nagsimula nang mag-isip ang ating mga kasamahan sa DepEd kung paanong magiging higit na mabuti pa ang padating na taon kaysa nakaraan. Kaya ang masasabi ko po diyan, talgang naghanda na po, naghahanda pa rin at handa na po tayo sa pagbubukas ng klase this coming week,” she said. </p><p>The official also hopes that learners, teachers and even parents will see the benefits of the implementation of the reorganized three-term school calendar which is divided into three main components: the opening block for orientations and preparations, the instructional block concentrated on teaching and learning, and end-of-term block for extra-curricular school activities.</p><p>“Kapag panahon ng pag-aaral, panahon ng leksyon, naka-concentrate po ang lahat sa lessons but activities are equally important, these form learners as well: leadership, communication, all these are also important. So, may tamang panahon din tayo na nilagay para sa mga activities na ito,” she noted.  </p><p>Oracion said that while the new three-term school calendar might appear simple, it helps educators &quot;avoid administrative peaks.&quot;</p><p>“Imbes na apat na beses po maghahanda ng exam, magko-correct ng exam, gagawa ng grades ang ating mga guro, naging tatlong beses na lang ‘to,” she said.</p><p>The education official added that the ongoing Brigada Eskwela is aimed at making schools safe and conducive to learning in the face of potential threats of water-borne illnesses such as dengue and calamity hazards this <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2026/6/4/rainy-season-is-here-pagasa-1725">rainy season.</a> </p><p>Asked about the current classroom shortage, Oracion said the government had been &quot;aggressive&quot; in constructing and repairing classrooms, noting that the country’s classroom deficit had been reduced from 165,000 to 144,000.</p><p>“But that’s still no joke. Marami pa rin po tayong kulang na classroom. Nagtatayo po tayo and we are really very aggressive on the construction of classrooms, talagang inaasikaso po ‘yan ng Department of Education ngayon and we may be able to add a significant number of classrooms with all the effort this year,” she said. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/2/deped-admits-literacy-crisis-is-severe-as-87-of-grade-11-students-struggle-to-read-independently-0227"><strong>DepEd admits literacy crisis is severe as 87% of Grade 11 students struggle to read independently </strong></a></div><p>Meanwhile, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) assured readiness and monitoring on the operations of electric cooperatives to ensure unimpeded power supply in schools as the new school year starts.</p><p>“Every year naman po ang NEA sadyang nag-uukol ng mga countermeasures and checks and balances monitoring po sa mga operations ng electric cooperatives. At every year naman po, meron kaming interagency coordination with Deped,” NEA Administrator Antonio Almeda said in the same interview on Friday. </p><p>“So far, wala naman po kaming nakikitang balakid o major issue na pwedeng mangyari aside from the fact na ang Visayas area is on yellow alert.
