MANILA — A South Korean fugitive wanted for allegedly operating a multimillion-won &quot;no-show&quot; scam has been arrested in Angeles City, Pampanga, following a joint law enforcement operation led by Philippine authorities.The suspect was arrested on June 28 by virtue of an Interpol Red Notice and an arrest warrant issued by the Busan District Court in South Korea for fraud.According to Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR) chief PCol. John Guiagui, South Korean authorities alerted Philippine law enforcement after learning that the fugitive was hiding in the country.“Upon verification sa Bureau of Immigration, meron nga entry siya. When we were tracking as to his whereabouts, nakita natin sa Angeles. It took us days para malaman kung saan siya doon,” Guiagui said. “Luckily, napadaan tayo sa isang community doon, siya namang labas niya. So we alerted our agency partners, then naikasa natin ‘yung operation sa kanya,” he added. <div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=313&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F994075330077769%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0" width="560" height="313" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Based on immigration records, the suspect last entered the Philippines on December 12, 2025 under a temporary visitor status but later became an overstaying alien after his authorized stay expired on June 9, 2026.</div>“Noong June 1, 2026, gusto niyang mag-renew. Kaso hindi siya nag-appear doon sa Bureau of Immigration. Instead may inutusan siya. So that also leads to… na nakita ‘yung record niya na meron nga talaga siyang red notice,” Guiagui said. According to Korean authorities, the suspect and several accomplices allegedly operated a fraudulent &quot;no-show&quot; scam. Under the scheme, the suspects allegedly posed as legitimate businessmen and convinced victims to purchase goods on their behalf with the promise of reimbursement. Instead, the victims were allegedly left to shoulder the costs after the suspects disappeared.The CIDG said seven victims were defrauded through 24 separate transactions, resulting in losses of approximately 170 million Korean won or around P6.7 million. Authorities are also looking into whether the suspect victimized Filipinos while staying in the country.“That will come into play kung may makita tayo… maimbestigahan natin sa kanya. Kasi as of now, wala pa naman humaharap sa atin na Pilipino nagsabi na naloko siya,” Guiagui said. The CIDG said that while the Philippines welcomes foreign visitors, it will not serve as a refuge for fugitives.“‘Yung mga foreigners dito, we welcome them as part of our tourism industry. But it is not a haven for those na criminals involved, both doon sa countries nila at saka dito.
