MANILA — The Office of the Bangsamoro Attorney General on Wednesday acknowledged the Supreme Court ruling with finality on the exclusion of Sulu from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

"While this outcome is not the result we are hoping for, we graciously accept the same," the Bangsamoro Attorney General's Office said in a statement.

"At this time, however, we have not yet received a copy of the Court's resolution. We will await formal receipt of the resolution and thoroughly study and review the same in order to carefully consider our next course of action as we move forward on the matter," it added.

The SC on Tuesday announced its "decision is final" and it denied the motions for partial consideration filed by the BARMM government, the Office of the Solicitor General and others.

Last month, the Bangsamoro government filed twin motions before the high court to include Sulu in the region, despite the province rejecting the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law in a 2019 plebiscite.

In its September ruling, the SC said it was wrong to include Sulu province in the Bangsamoro region, citing a violation of Article X, Section 18 of the Constitution, which states provinces, cities and geographic areas voting favorably in plebiscites shall be included in the autonomous region.

The Bangsamoro Parliament is composed of 80 members: 40 political party representatives, 32 district representatives and eight sectoral representatives.

Seven seats were originally allocated to Sulu.

But with the exclusion of Sulu from BARMM, only 73 parliamentary seats will be at stake at the 2025 elections.

The Bangsamoro Parliament may re-allocate the parliamentary seats originally for Sulu province, however it said this will entail a long and tedious process.

The first-ever Bangsamoro parliamentary elections are set to take place alongside the national and local elections in May.

There have been calls and measures filed to extend the transition period and postpone the polls because of changes due to the SC ruling on Sulu.

The Commission on Elections earlier said preparations for the parliamentary elections continue and defer the matter of postponement to Congress.
