MANILA — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said the ambush in Sumisip, Basilan, which resulted in the death of two soldiers, did not hamper the normalization and peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

“Under investigation ito but ang buong proseso ng peace process, hindi ito nahamper with this incident. Ang gusto nating mangyari dito is maresolve na ang issues at hand,” AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla told reporters in a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City on Tuesday.

“Tuluy-tuloy pa rin ang gains na nakuha natin sa peace process. As our CSAFP has said, let us give peace a chance,” she added.

The Normalization Program, which is part of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, aims to transform former MILF combatants into peaceful and productive civilians.

Padilla said that the clash was an isolated incident, adding no similar incidents have been reported in recent years.

The AFP hopes such incidents will not happen again.

“May mga MILF member na nahiwalay ng landas and ang hope ng AFP ay hindi na ito maulit and that proper sanctions be given to these personnel,” Padilla said. “We leave it with the MILF na iharap nila sa batas itong mga nasasangkot dito.”

Four people, including two soldiers and two lawless elements, were killed in the ambush in Barangay Lower Cabengbeng on January 22. Twelve more soldiers were wounded in the incident.

The clash between soldiers of the 32nd Infantry Battalion and lawless elements backed by members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) happened during a legitimate security operation in support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
