Blackout hits Eastern Visayas after 6.9 quake

<p>A region-wide power interruption struck Eastern Visayas past midnight on Wednesday, October 1, following the magnitude 6.9 <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/9/30/magnitude-6-7-earthquake-jolts-cebu-2216">earthquake </a>that hit off Cebu at 9:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 30.</p><p>According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the earthquake caused Leyte, Samar, and parts of Bohol to be cut off from the Cebu-Negros-Panay grid. NGCP also reported damage to its Daanbantayan Substation, located near the quake’s epicenter, and the tripping of four (4) 230-kV transmission lines in the Visayas.</p><div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FNGCPph%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02RZ5rDv7uJhamN9esdbQrYgEgizRfawWCSD3ufbkVhUhZ5tsiRj4sgHdTtqWTK7fLl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="731" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>The disruption left all eleven electric cooperatives in Eastern Visayas, ( BILECO, DORELCO, LEYECO II, LEYECO III, LEYECO IV, LEYECO V, SOLECO, SAMELCO I, SAMELCO II, ESAMELCO and NORSAMELCO) without power, affecting hundreds of thousands of households.</p><p>By 12:30 a.m., power transmission services have been restored in Panay, Negros, Cebu and Bohol and are now under normal operations. </p><p>&quot;LEYTE-SAMAR - In the process of ALD restoration affected by multiple line and generator tripping but subsequently affected by tripping of Luzon-Visayas link/partial blackout incident,&quot; NGCP said in its 4 a.m. advisory. </p><div><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FNGCPph%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02hV14kVBFK57HgUpPdEAt6AWoAvve1FjVsSZa9peitSCyBJ195VjNeGRd7VPiGQxSl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500" width="500" height="447" style="border:none;overflow:hidden" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><p>NGCP said aerial and ground inspections and restoration work will begin as soon as it is safe.</p><p>Local electric cooperatives assured their member-consumer-owners that updates will be provided as soon as NGCP issues further information on power restoration.</p><p>NGCP is responsible for transmitting high-voltage electricity from power plants to the substations of the distribution utilities like electric cooperatives, while electric cooperatives handle the distribution of electricity to homes and businesses.</p>
