'Protect our baby': Mother recounts heroic deed of daughter killed in Cebu quake

<p>In a heart-wrenching account, Juvy Ytang recalled on Thursday her daughter&#x27;s brave act of rushing to their bedroom as a magnitude 6.9 tremor struck during an earthquake in the central Philippines.</p><p>Her daughter, Lady Jane, used her own body as a protective barrier against flying wreckage, saving her family at the cost of her own life. </p><p>Their home, nestled at the base of a mountain, was partly engulfed by a landslide triggered by the quake, which happened on Tuesday. </p><p>Ytang said her daughter&#x27;s selfless act had killed her when she got hit on the head by the debris. </p><p>&quot;It was love. She protected her mother, family and her siblings,&quot; she said, while staring at her daughter&#x27;s coffin, which was situated in a tent together with other victims of the quake. </p><p>Ytang&#x27;s baby suffered minor bruises on the head, while her husband, Silvestre, suffered injuries on his head and foot. </p><p>&quot;She saved us. She was the reason why we lived, but she was the one who died,&quot; he said. </p><p>The family does not know what they plan to do next since there are still aftershocks being reported, and they cannot go back to their homes since it was buried in a landslide. </p><p>Striking waters off Cebu&#x27;s central island late Tuesday, the quake has <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/3/ndrrmc-lowers-cebu-quake-death-toll-to-68-1051">killed at least 68</a>, injured over 300, and caused more than 20,000 people to be displaced.</p><div><em>(Production: Adrian Portugal, Peter Blaza)</em></div><div> </div><div><strong><br/></strong></div>
