Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA <strong>(UPDATE) </strong>— The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday lowered the number of deaths from the magnitude 6.8 earthquake in Cebu to 68 from Thursday’s 72.</p><p>Diego Mariano, officer-in-charge of the Civil Defense Communications and Advocacy Division, said the figure was validated by the Management of the Dead and Missing (MDM) cluster, a newly activated unit under the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).</p><p>“Please take note lang po that the numbers may increase or decrease as validation of the MDM led by DILG is ongoing po,” he told reporters.</p><p>As of the 6 a.m. situation report, the NDRRMC recorded 599 injured persons, pending further validation.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>‘MATTER OF DOUBLE ENTRY’</strong></div><div><br/></div><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/175945973327120251002-cebu-earthquake-binabag-bogo-MT007.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Family members grieve as they hold a vigil on Thursday, October 2, 2025, for loved ones who perished in a landslide triggered by the powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake in Barangay Binabag, Bogo City, Cebu, on September 30. Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Friday afternoon explained the lowered number of reported deaths was &quot;a matter of double entry.”</p><p>OCD Central Visayas Regional Director Joel Erestain said adjustments are being made upon validation by the Management of the Dead and Missing (MDM) cluster, a newly activated unit under the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).</p><p>“Adjustment is being made once names and other documents are submitted to the activated MDM cluster led by DILG,” he said.</p><p>Erestain added that the total number is not final until official reports from the Philippine National Police (PNP) are complete.</p><p>“To date, official PNP spot reports and death certificates are not complete yet. Hence this total number is still for verification and validation,” he said.</p><p>Thousands of houses and other infrastructure sustained damage from the powerful earthquake that struck Tuesday night, while aftershocks continue to shake the Visayas region.</p><p>A total of 80,595 families or 366,360 individuals were affected.
