Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — The aftershocks in Cebu may persist from a couple of weeks to months following the magnitude 6.9 quake that killed at least 70 in the province, Phivolcs said on Monday.</p><p>Phivolcs has recorded some 7,000 aftershocks from the offshore <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/9/30/magnitude-6-7-earthquake-jolts-cebu-2216">earthquake</a> that hit the province on Sept. 30.</p><p>These aftershocks range between magnitude 1 and magnitude 5.1, many of which were mild and not felt, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said. </p><p>“Normal na may aftershocks pagkatapos ng malakas na lindol at puwede itong tumagal nang ilang linggo o buwan. Habang tumatagal naman, pahina nang pahina ang mga ito habang bumababa ang stress sa fault,” he said in a briefing on state-run PTV. </p><p>“Lumiliit yung numbers natin and humihina din ang lakas ng aftershocks,” he added.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/10/3/magnitude-5-1-aftershock-rocks-bogo-city-cebu-0737">Magnitude 5.1 aftershock rocks Bogo City, Cebu</a></div><p>While Phivolcs continues to monitor these aftershocks, he said residents should be wary of “ground ruptures” or the fissures or displacement in the ground due to the fault’s movement.</p><p>“Ito ang surface manifestation ng active fault natin so kapag tinamaan ang bahay mo ng ground rupture, puwedeng masira yan at walang engineering intervention,” he said.</p><p>“Yung sinkhole, usually nasa luncheon areas. Natabunan lang, may sediment cover, but because of the strong shaking, bumagsak ang cover at na-expose ang sinkholes.
