A barangay chairman was shot dead while doing a live broadcast on Facebook at the garage of his residence in Digos City, Davao del Sur on Tuesday night.Barangay Tres de Mayo chairman Oscar “Dodong” Bucol, Jr. was brought to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival after sustaining a gunshot wound.In his Facebook live around 9 p.m., Bucol was seen talking to a man who arrived at his house to turn over a wallet he found.While mentioning the name on the ID in the wallet, a series of gunshots were heard as the victim gasped in pain. The people in the area scrambled to hide, while a bleeding Bucol attempted to escape and screamed for help while holding his mobile phone.Based on the initial investigation of the Davao del Sur police, a Toyota Innova multipurpose vehicle parked outside the residence of the victim and left after the incident.Bucol sustained a gunshot wound to his left chest, with two fired bullets recovered at the crime scene.The Davao del Sur police launched a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to look into the killing.PCapt. Sheila May Pansoy, spokesperson of the provincial police, said investigators were looking into several persons of interest for possible involvement in Bucol’s shooting.Among the motives they are investigating is politics, as Bucol was known for his fierce, direct, and hard-hitting rhetoric against politicians whom he claimed were involved in certain anomalies.“Isa yung mga na-mention niya na personalities sa kanyang Facebook live. Yun pong mga personalities, yun din yung isa sa mga POI na ina-identify ng mga investigators natin. Yung mga pino-post niya sa Facebook is mga information yon na according sa kanya na alam niya na involved yung certain individuals sa allegedly hindi magandang gawain,” Pansoy said.A day before the crime, Bucol was also interviewed about whether he was concerned for his life following his explosive statements on social media.“Akong gikabalak-an ang nerbyos sa akong pamilya. Pero sa akoa man gud, kaning mangalagad ka nga pabor sa katawhan, mobarog gyud ka kay mao man ang rason nga naa ta diri, permanente na gyud na ang kritikal sa imong kinabuhi (What concerns me is the worry of my family. But for me, when you serve in favor of the people, you really have to stand your ground because that’s the reason we are here, living with constant risk is already part of life),” he said.“Hagbay ra kong nakigbisog sa kriminal, murderer, kaluoy sa Diyos, buhi pa man ko. Motuo man gyud ko, kung patay ka aning adlawa, patay gyud ka aning adlawa. Kung kani akong pakigbisog para sa katungod sa katawhan maoy hinungdan sa akong kamatayon, so be it. At least dili ko malimtan sa katawhan (I have long been fighting criminals, murderers, and by God’s mercy, I am still alive. I truly believe that if it is your day to die, then it is your day to die. And if this fight for the rights of the people becomes the cause of my death, so be it. At least I will not be forgotten by the people),” he added.Supporters of the victim gathered outside the hospital where he was brought, shouting for justice, while others cried in grief following the death of the barangay chairman.Digos City Mayor Josef Cagas condemned the incident, saying that despite their political feud on social media, he never wished for Bucol’s death.“Wala koy katakus ug kinaiya sa pagbuhat niini. Ang mga issues nga iyang gipanghisgutan sa iyang mga FB Live, dili bag-o alang kanako ug dili lang siya ang naghisgot niini. Una na kining gihisgutan sa akong mga kaatbang sa politika sa mga nanglabayng elections,” he said on his Facebook page.(I do not have the capacity nor the character to do such a thing. The issues he talked about in his Facebook live videos are not new to me, and he is not the only one who has brought them up. These were first raised by my political opponents during past elections.)
