MANILA -- The Bureau of Customs (BOC) intercepted around 15 kilograms or P170 million worth of illegal drugs at Pier 5 in Cebu City, the agency said on Sunday.

In a statement, BOC said they were able to foil the supposed drug smuggling attempt during a random inspection of a merchant vessel wherein a red vehicle had to undergo further inspection.

"A K9 unit sweep detected the presence of illegal substances inside a carton. Further examination confirmed 25 plastic packages containing 'shabu,' leading to the immediate seizure of the contraband," the statement read.

The suspects, a mother and her son, were arrested. They are currently under the custody of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Central Visayas.

The two suspects may face a complaint in relation to Section 5 of Republic Act 9165, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, according to the BOC.

"This operation is a testament to our strengthened border security measures and strategic partnerships with law enforcement agencies. We will remain vigilant in our mission to prevent the illegal drug trade from infiltrating our country," said BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio.

Aside from the BOC, other agencies such as the Philippine Navy, Cebu Port Authority, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police Maritime Group, PNP Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit, and Cebu City Police Station 4 helped during the operation.
