In an interview, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa noted the serious health risks posed by volcanic ashfall, especially for those directly exposed to it. He said that inhaling ash, which may contain sulfur, can be harmful.

"Because malaking ash cloud ang na-create, ang biggest threat is really ash fall. At isa pang biggest threat sa ganyan ay inhalation ng ash ng volcano. At alam niyo naman, may sulfur 'yan," said Herbosa.

"Noong pumutok iyong Taal, ang sinabi namin, sa bahay ka lang para hindi mo ma-inhale iyong ash fall. Kung lalabas ka, magsuot ka ng N95 mask. So iyon ang recommendation din dito. Magdi-distribute ang aming regional office sa Bicol ng mga N95 mask," he added.

Individuals with asthma, heart disease, and lung conditions are strongly advised to stay away from danger zones and seek temporary shelter in evacuation areas, where they can be monitored for possible health complications linked to ash inhalation.

Meanwhile, DOH also cautioned evacuees against possible outbreaks of diseases such as dengue and diarrhea, which may arise due to overcrowding and unsafe food and water in evacuation centers.
