<p>MANILA — The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday said it would convene a special team to lead the probe into the killing of former Kalibo, Aklan mayor and veteran journalist Juan “Johnny” Dayang. </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/2/chr-launches-independent-probe-into-killing-of-journalist-johnny-dayang-1438">CHR launches independent probe into killing of journalist Johnny Dayang</a></div><p>Dayang was shot dead last April 29, 2025 in Bgy. Andagao, Kalibo.</p><p>“The Secretary of Justice has issued a Department Order designating two prosecutors to head the SITN (Special Investigation Team on New Cases),” the DOJ said in a statement. </p><p>The DOJ further said the designated prosecutors will immediately convene a multi-agency team of investigators from the Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation, and other agencies.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/4/29/dating-kalibo-mayor-at-papi-president-patay-sa-pamamaril-2256?">Dating Kalibo mayor patay sa pamamaril</a></div><p>The investigators are tasked with leading and supervising the fact-finding process, gathering and securing evidence and facilitating the filing of appropriate charges, if necessary.</p><p>The  DOJ also said Presidential Task Force on Violence against Media Workers (PTFoMs) Undersecretary Jose Torres, Jr. was notified of the development and is closely coordinating with the team.</p><p>“The Department of Justice remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguard press freedom and ensure that acts of violence against media practitioners do not go unpunished,” the DOJ said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/5/2/press-freedom-in-ph-improved-but-global-state-of-journalists-falls-to-difficult-for-first-time-1537">Press freedom in PH improves but global state of journalists falls to &#x27;difficult&#x27; for first time</a></div><p>Kalibo police said Dayang was just watching TV when he was gunned down by a still unidentified assailant, who fled the scene in a motorcycle.</p><p>The motive of the killing remains under investigation, the police said.</p><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3yrWkT2XUXc?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
