MANILA — Modifications have been made to a port in Basey, Samar to accommodate roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) ships and ease congestion caused by restrictions on the use of the San Juanico Bridge between Samar and Leyte islands.

With heavy trucks barred from using the bridge and the Calbayog, Samar-Ormoc, Leyte shipping route at risk of congestion, the government has had to scramble to find ways to transport goods between islands.

The Department of Transportation announced Sunday that the Port of Amendayehan l has been opened to RoRo shipping after a week of construction.

“Ang sabi po ng Pangulo bilisan talaga natin ang construction para tuloy-tuloy na ang delivery ng goods and services para sa ating mga kababayan. Nagpapasalamat tayo sa mabilis na aksyon ng national agencies kasama ang provincial at lokal na pamahalaan ng Samar at Tacloban para masolusyunan agad ang problemang ito, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said in a release.

(The President told us to speed up the construction so the delivery of goods and services would not be impeded. We thank the national agencies, including the provincial and local government units of Samar and Tacloban, for their quick response to this problem.)

The whole Eastern Visayas was placed in a state of calamity in May after restrictions on the San Juanico Bridge left hundreds of trucks and the goods they were carrying stranded.

Vehicles heavier than three tons are not allowed to use the San Juanico Bridge, a route essential for transporting goods and services across the Eastern Visayas region.

The bridge is more than 50 years old and needs urgent repairs, the public works department said.

Government agencies and local government units earlier agreed that the Tacloban-Basey route is the most efficient among all sea routes, with a travel time of only 30 minutes—way less than the 12 to 15 hours on others.

The Tacloban-Basey route is also cheaper than other routes.
