<p>MANILA — The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Wednesday warned fisherfolk in 22 provinces to stay away from coastal areas potentially affected by tsunami waves following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.</p><p>DA Deputy Spokesperson Assistant Secretary Joycel Panlilio advised residents who depend on fishing for their livelihood to heed the warning from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/7/30/philippines-safe-from-tsunami-threat-after-magnitude-8-7-quake-off-russia-coast-phivolcs-0939">READ: Phivolcs issues tsunami warning after megaquake off Russia</a></div><p>“Panawagan sa ating mga kababayan na iwasan na muna yung mga lugar na ‘yon. Nag-issue naman po kasi ang Phivolcs at nasa social media page na ito… na iwasan na muna po natin pumunta doon dahil meron na nga po warning dahil sa earthquake na nangyari sa Russia at maaari pong maapektuhan ang Pilipinas,” Panlilio said.</p><p>State seismologists earlier warned that the first tsunami waves, possibly under one meter high, could reach Philippine shores between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday.</p><p>Phivolcs advised residents of the following coastal provinces to stay away from beaches and refrain from going to the shore: Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur and Davao de Oro.</p><p>Panlilio said the department is prepared to assist affected communities, although specific numbers on how many fisherfolk may be impacted are not yet available.</p><p>“Yung mga maapektuhan po na mangingisda, ang DA po ay through our fisheries and aquatic resources ay pwede naman po magbigay ng alternative means of livelihood kung maapektuhan po sila ng tsunami.
