Suspect in Nueva Ecija school shooting dies; victim still in critical condition

<p>MANILA -- The 18-year-old suspect who shot himself after attacking his ex-girlfriend inside the Sta. Rosa Integrated School in Nueva Ecija last Thursday has passed away.</p><p>His remains are now at his family&#x27;s residence.</p><p>The 15-year-old girl, meanwhile, remains in critical condition and is still unconscious, though her family is hopeful that she will recover.</p><p>According to initial reports, the 18-year-old male student entered the school premises, shot the 15-year-old Grade 8 student, and then shot himself.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/regions/2025/8/7/police-confirm-shooting-inside-nueva-ecija-school-1620">READ: Shooting incident in Nueva Ecija school leaves 2 students critically injured</a></div><p>The victim&#x27;s grandfather, 72-year-old Elmer Oliva, said his granddaughter was shot in the left temple and has been in a coma since the incident.</p><p>&quot;Kritikal pa rin. Ayaw pang dumilat. Nasa coma pa siya... Tinanong ko kanina &#x27;yong doctor kung yang pasyente ay may pag-asa. Yan ika ang mahirap sagutin. Basta ang focus ika natin, buhayin,&quot; he added.</p><p>Doctors have yet to operate on the girl due to her unstable condition.</p><p>&quot;Hindi daw pwede at hindi pa nagkakamalay... Magkamalay muna siya bago operahin,&quot; said Oliva.</p><p>Although the victim&#x27;s family has been receiving financial help, Oliva admitted it may not be enough to cover the cost of a possible operation.</p><p>&quot;Narinig ko isang milyon daw. &#x27;Yon ang sabi nila. Mahirap. But then we are looking for remedies na baka sakaling ma-trace pa rin like macro-etching. Ita-try naming i-trace kung sino sa kapamilya, kaibigan o kakilala na pwede niyang pinagkuhanan ng baril,&quot; said PMaj. Willard Dulnuan, Chief of Sta. Rosa PNP.</p><p>In response to the incident, the Department of Education and local police have held an initial meeting to discuss possible improvements in school security.</p><p>&quot;No&#x27;ng huling pag-uusap namin ng DepEd sa division office, nabanggit na yan. &#x27;Yong security kase ng school na &#x27;yon ay galing sa provincial government.
