Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is already on &quot;red alert&quot; to provide assistance to thousands of families affected by super typhoon Nando and the southwest monsoon (habagat), the agency said on Monday. In a public briefing, DSWD Spokesperson Irene Dumlao said more than 2.6 million food packs &quot;are strategically prepositioned&quot; across the Philippines for the impact of the bad weather.Of the figure, 106,000 family food packs are prepositioned in the Ilocos Region, while 140,000 food packers are strategically prepositioned in Cagayan Valley and 80,000 in the Cordillera Administrative Region. Over the weekend, the official said around 4,000 family food packs were delivered to Kalinga and an additional 1,000 food packs were also sent to Benguet. <div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2025/9/22/super-typhoon-nando-approaches-babuyan-islands-life-threatening-conditions-imminent-1119">READ: Super typhoon Nando approaches Babuyan Islands, &#x27;life-threatening&#x27; conditions imminent</a></div>&quot;Dahil ang Calayan Islands ay isa sa mga apektado, nais nating banggitin na may 2,000 family food packs na naka-preposition diyan bago tumama si Bagyong Nando,&quot; said Dumlao. &quot;Over the weekend nakapagpadala tayo ng karagdagang food packs para madagdagan ang ating stockpile sa mga lugar na yan. Sa katunayan, 8,500 family food packs ang pinahatid natin sa Region 2 para madagdagan ang mga food packs na naka-preposition na,&quot; she added. These strategically prepositioned food packs sought to ensure that their resources – food and non-food items – would be enough to all individuals affected. Strategically placing them in several areas also ensures that these would be delivered in a timely manner to the public, she said.  Around P2.8 million worth of food pack and non-food items have been provided to affected families in recent storms, including those affected by tropical depression Mirasol. &quot;Mayroon tayong national stockpile na 2.6 million family food packs at kung idadagdag natin ang halaga ng ating standby funds, nasa mahigit P1.5 billion ang total standby funds and stockpile ng DSWD,&quot; she said. &quot;Ito ay sapat para matugunan ang pangangailangan ng ating mga kababayan na maaapektuhan at naapektuhan ng Bagyong Nando,&quot; she said.Emergency cash transfers may be available for residents whose houses were destroyed by the storm, she said, and to support their early recovery. Life-threatening conditions are imminent over Extreme Northern Luzon as Super Typhoon Nando passes close to the Babuyan Islands.At 1 p.m. Monday, Nando was over the coastal waters of Babuyan Island of Calayan, Cagayan.The entire Babuyan island group is now placed under Wind Signal no. 5 while Signal no. 4 is hoisted over southern Batanes and the northern sections of mainland Cagayan and Ilocos Norte.
