MANILA – The government of Japan has committed to extending services and assistance to strengthen maternal and child health services in remote islands located in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.  In a statement, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said this is especially for internally displaced persons in the said provinces in Mindanao. Ambassador Endo Kazuya said his government would provide  JPY 516,000,000 or nearly P200 million for upgrades on health facilities and supply of Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) equipment.Project REACH BASULTA (Resilient and Equitable Access to Care and Health in BASULTA), the envoy said, would help those areas to meet the basic emergency obstetric and newborn care standards. &#x27;&#x27;The project is a commitment to building a sustainable and resilient health system that prioritizes the well-being of all individuals,” said Endo.“By addressing the systemic gaps in health services, we hope to foster an environment where every mother and child has access to the care they need,&quot; he said.Aside from this, the program seeks to roll out “targeted technical training” of health professionals. This includes technical assistance to the health facilities in sustaining the standards and eventually reaching PhilHealth accreditation.It will also “promote culturally sensitive, integrated MNCH health promotion campaigns, and support government-led PhilHealth registration drives.” The initiative supposedly adopts a two-pronged strategy that focuses on strengthening health systems and enhancing community engagement to improve MNCH practices and expand access to quality services for women, adolescents, caregivers, and displaced communities. The envoy signed and exchanged notes with the International Organization for (IOM Philippines) Chief of Mission Tristan Burnett for the project. Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity Secretary Carlito Galvez, and other Philippine officials were also present during the event.<div> </div>
