<p>MANILA — Before sunrise on Easter Sunday in Rapu-Rapu in Albay, a black veil is lifted as angels appear from above, marking a symbolic end to Holy Week. </p><p>Organized by Sta. Florentina Parish, the &quot;Saklot” ritual is an annual tradition that commemorates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Saklot ritual program </strong></div><p>The “Saklot” begins as early as 4 a.m. with two simultaneous processions: One led by men carrying the image of the Risen Christ dressed in white, and another by women accompanying in the mourning Virgin Mary. </p><p>Beneath this towering canopy, the ritual reaches its cinematic peak: a child-angel descends from the structure “heavens&quot; dramatically stripping the black veil or taklob from the Virgin Mary to reveal her own robes of celebratory white silk linen cloth. </p><p>This visual transition from grief to glory ignites a choral proceeding to the singing of the choir, and communal jubilation, seamlessly bridging the gap between the somber drama of the streets and the triumphant morning Mass that follows. </p><p>This visual transition from grief to glory ignites a sensory explosion of pealing bells, choral hymns, and communal jubilation, followed by the triumphant morning Mass that follows.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Historical Roots</strong></div><p>Spanish colonialism significantly altered the landscape of the Philippines, most notably through missionization and converting locals to Catholicism.</p><p>Many lowland Philippine polities converted and joined Catholic Church. </p><p>In the Bikol region, Bikolanos rapidly converted to Catholicism and established some of the earliest churches in the country and incorporated practices thereon. </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Reclaiming the word</strong></div><p>The term Saklot carries a complex linguistic history. Inherently, it is a negatively charged word in Bicol, referring to the act of seizing something forcibly or coercively. </p><p>In the rural legends of Rapu-Rapu, it is often associated with being &quot;snatched&quot; or abducted by the aswang (shape-shifting creatures).</p><p>However, the Church and the community reclaimed the word. Instead of a forced abduction by darkness, it now represents the forceful breaking of sorrow by light.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Filipino maternal attachment</strong></div><p>While the meeting of Jesus Christ and His Mother Mary is found nowhere in the Bible, the Filipino Salubong tradition fills this scriptural gap through a blend of cultural intuition and colonial pedagogy. </p><p>This theological &quot;missing link&quot; resonated deeply with the Filipino psyche; to the local sensibility, it is considered only natural, or even imperative, that a son would first comfort his grieving mother.  </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Geographical insulation</strong></div><p>Rapu-Rapu, Albay, an island municipality cradled by the waters of the Albay Gulf, remains accessible only by sea. </p><p>Unlike many towns reshaped by highways, airports, and rapid development and poor urban planning, Rapu-Rapu stands apart. Its physical isolation serves as a quiet barrier against the rush of urbanization. </p><p>This ruralized nature may be a signifier of being behind but Sta. Florentina Parish Church believes this is a factor that has allowed long-held customs and religious practices to endure, preserved as living traditions faithfully observed year after year. </p><div><br/></div><div><strong>Local’s account</strong></div><p>Bella Hayagan, 71, a resident, a church council member and a tenured Saklot organizer said that Saklot thrive along with the pious nature of Rapu-Rapunhuns. Devotion and faith is what the Saklot is all about. </p><p>‘Ang saklot simbolismo ki pag-asa na dapat dapat dai nawawara maski ano pa man ang tig aagihan, arog ni Maria kang pangyare sa aki nyang si Hesus” (Saklot symbolizes hope that should remain no matter what we are going through just like Maria’s endurance and faith)</p><p>Fr. Niles Guianan, SOLT, parochial priest of Sta. Florentina Parish, it was the symbolism of Saklot that deserved to be cemented: Paglaom. </p><p>“Tiggigibo man giraray ang Saklot kang simbahan ta bukod sa nakasanayan na, asin nakacement na sa kultura, natatawan kita ki Paglaom na may mas maliwanag na kinaumagahan.” (Saklot is conducted annually by the Church even after the fact that it was a tradition and has grown embedded to the culture, it was an event that highlights Paglaom– that there is better days coming)</p><p>Paglaom is another Bikol term for hope that encapsulates the essence of  Saklot,  despite the lack of biblical account and reference of this tradition, it remains a dramatized promise that no matter how dark the night is, hope shall light the island and the anticipating locals.</p>
