MANILA – Chinese tech giant HONOR hinted that its mobile phones will soon have the ability to detect deepfakes.

The company said it is set to unveil its "AI Deepfake Detection" feature which can identify "fabricated content by analyzing eye contact, lighting, image clarity, and video playback."

The new feature, which will be unveiled at the 2025 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, will allow users to detect AI-generated face-swaps.

"If synthetic or altered content is detected by the feature, a risk warning will be immediately issued to the user, protecting them from continuous engagement with potential deepfakes and ensuring their safety," HONOR said.

MWC Barcelona is an annual expo for players in the mobile communications industry. This year, the event will be held from March 3 to 6.

Deepfakes have become widespread in recent years thanks to the ready availability of generative AI tools that usually only require a few prompts to generate a video based on a photo and audio file of an individual.

Last year, an official of the Department of Information and Communications Technology said deepfakes were the biggest threat to the Philippines’ 2025 midterm elections.

Face-swapping and voice-cloning tech have also been used by criminals in financial scams.
