<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/17507816582071750781655490.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>MANILA — Canon bills its EOS R50 V as the camera for vloggers and content creators thanks to its many video-focused features. If you create a lot of content in a studio or indoor setting, this camera may just be the right gear for you. But if you do a lot of content outdoors, this camera may require a few accessories. </p><p>As a video-focused camera, it also left out some features that photographers would want.</p><p>I used to be a camera geek. I got my first DSLR (the legendary Canon EOS Rebel 300D) more than two decades ago, and since then, my wife and I have accumulated several Canons through the years. We have the EOS 400, 600, and then the EOS M50 a few years back, as well as several lenses.</p><p>I haven’t really been using dedicated cameras lately because smartphones have already gotten so good at photography. However, when Canon asked me if I wanted to review one of their latest cameras, I saw it as a chance to rekindle my enthusiasm for “serious” photography.  </p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1750779034703r50v 2.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>The EOS R50 V is a mirrorless camera, which means it’s more compact than DSLRs as it does away with the swinging mirror mechanism in SLRs that’s used to preview the shot on the analog viewfinder.</p><p>And this is one of the things that you immediately notice about the R50 V–it doesn’t have a viewfinder— not even an electronic viewfinder. You need to preview your shots on the screen itself. </p><p>For video content creators shooting indoors, this is not an issue. In a studio setting where you can control light with precision, a viewfinder is not needed as the display is more than enough. But outdoors, where the ambient light can overpower the brightness of the display, this can complicate your shooting.</p><p>A nice feature of the screen however, is that it fully articulates or swivels. If you want to get a higher or lower angle, you can lift up or even lay down the camera on the ground and tilt the screen towards you to see what the shot will look like.</p><p>Vloggers who want to take a selfie video can swivel the screen to face them so they can see just how the shot will look.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1750779089342r50v 3.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>Another obvious video-focused feature of the camera is that the control dial on top shows just one mode for shooting photos, with the rest of the modes dedicated to video and video presets. You can still tweak the settings for taking photos, but you will have to go to the Menu and fiddle with the touch screen display.</p><p>Vloggers, especially those who shoot vertical video for TikTok and Reels will also appreciate the R50 V’s additional tripod mounting option on the side. This is handy, especially when your tripod doesn’t swivel 90 degrees to the side for a clean vertical video shot.</p><p>There’s also a record button on the front of the camera when you want to film yourself. It even has a dedicated Live button for livestreaming. You can livestream directly to YouTube, Facebook and Twitch. For other platforms, you will need to type in the URL in the Camera Connect app.  </p><p>You can set up livestreaming via:</p><ul style="margin-left:20px;list-style-type:disc"><li>a USB-C cable to a PC</li><li>an HDMI cable (via a switcher) to a PC</li><li>Wirelessly to a phone or tablet via the free Camera Connect smartphone app</li><li>Wirelessly to a smart device via the Live Switcher Mobile multi-camera app</li></ul><div><br/></div><p>One advantage of the R50 V over smartphones and other video-focused cameras is that it is able to use a variety of lenses. You can use wide-angle lenses to make tight spaces look bigger, or prime lenses for shallower depth-of-field and beautiful bokeh. You can even use long zoom lenses if you want to shoot subjects from afar. </p><p>While flagship smartphones now have incredible photo and video capabilities, they just aren’t able to recreate bokeh like a good lens can. Pictures taken with 10x zoom on a phone are also nothing like those taken with a 300mm lens.</p><div><strong>SAMPLE VIDEO </strong></div><script data-wid="auto" type="text/javascript" src="https://content.viralize.tv/display/?zid=AAFz8gWM8iRADsJr&amp;cid=ABbGGJJzbhCSpRAm"></script><p>If you use older EF lenses, though, you will need an RF adapter to use them on the R50 V. Canon has updated its interchangeable lens ecosystem with the RF mounts, which are supposed to offer better optical performance and more compact designs than their EF counterparts. I wasn’t able to use our older lenses on the R50 V because of this.</p><p>There’s even a dedicated “zoom” lever for zoom-compatible lenses–a feature that’s usually seen only in video cameras. This is great when shooting video as it gives a smooth and consistent zoom control through a wide range of focal lengths. For lenses that are not “Power Zoom” compatible, though, like the old EF series, the zoom lever can only be used when shooting in 1080p, as the camera uses a trick where it shoots 4K and then crops it slowly for the zoom effect.</p><p>The camera shoots 4K at up to 60 frames per second, and records in the broadcast and filmmaking industry-standard XF-HEVC S and XF-AVC S formats. Canon says it is also equipped with the ability to oversample from 6K to deliver 4K videos with enhanced quality. The camera however, lacks in-body stabilization, which means you will also need a stabilized lens if you want to shoot video handheld. It does take a while though to recharge the battery, around two hours, so better bring a couple of spares if you are going to do a multi-hour shoot. Or you could also use a power bank to juice up the camera by plugging it into the USBC port.</p><p>I found the built-in mic adequate for recording audio, but I think any content creator who is buying this camera will also know enough to invest in a plugin mic for enhanced audio quality.</p><p>So the EOS R50 V seems all tricked out for video. People who want to shoot photos however, are probably better off with its photo-focused cousin the EOS R50 (no V).</p><p>We brought the R50 V on a recent trip to Japan, and I had some struggles with the lack of a viewfinder. Trying to compose a shot on the display and fiddling with the menus to get shutter speed, aperture and ISO right was anything but easy. It was a chore to judge exposure and composition in bright sunlight. Since I wear eyeglasses, I also needed to hold the camera at arm’s length to see the screen properly.</p><p>In bright surroundings, you can basically forget about even trying to view the display–it’s low resolution and not bright enough. All these things wouldn’t have been an issue if there was a viewfinder with a diopter.</p><p>You can use the R50 V to get amazing still photos, as some professional photographers have shown in their reviews of this camera, but this gear clearly just isn’t designed for that use case.</p><p>For content creators though, who want broadcast and cinema-quality video, there may be a lot of things to like about the R50 V.</p><p>Canon said that along with the camera unit and RF-S 14-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM PZ power zoom lens, customers can purchase the EOS R50 V for P64,998 with the following items included:</p><p style="line-height:1">Canon Tripod Grip HG-100TBR</p><p style="line-height:1">Canon DM-E100 Stereo Microphone</p><p style="line-height:1">128GB SD Card</p>
