MANILA — Metro Manila taxis are getting an upgrade as two operators launch fully electric taxi fleets.Ride-hailing giant Grab and newcomer Green GSM have recently both launched EV taxi fleets. While Grab’s EV fleet is made up of Chinese EV maker Changan’s Eado EV460 model,  Green GSM’s fleet is made up of Vietnamese EV maker VinFast’s Nerio Green model.Grab said its all-EV fleet, launched in partnership with local operator EV Taxi Corp, begins operations in key Metro Manila hubs including Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Paranaque, and Pasay.“The launch builds upon Grab’s June 2024 pilot study with BYD Philippines, which demonstrated the operational and financial viability of electric vehicles for both fleet operators and driver-partners. The findings affirmed a key insight: electrification is not just an environmental imperative; it is also a cost-effective and scalable model for urban mobility,”Grab users can opt to book an electric taxi on the app, alongside traditional Grab mobility services. Green GSM taxis meanwhile can also be booked several ways either by using the Green SM app, or by contacting 02-7777-8080, or by hailing them manually if there is a unit passing by.Grab said its EV taxi service is part of the company’s broader eco-mobility strategy, which includes expanding EV adoption across its GrabCar fleet in regional cities such as Davao and Cagayan De Oro within the year.“This phased rollout will be supported by in-app sustainability features such as voluntary contributions for environmental conservation efforts for every Grab transaction, and deeper collaboration with government and private sector partners to accelerate EV ecosystem readiness nationwide,” Grab said.On the website of the local distributor of Changan, the Eado is not listed among the models available for purchase. Vinfast’s Philippine website does not list the Nerio Green either, although the model looks similar to the company’s VF5 model which is locally sold.
