They’ve become so popular that we’re now getting electrified pickup trucks.</p><p>Changan Philippines recently lent us their all-new Nevo Hunter K50 to test. We drove it around the city and took it on a short trip outside the metro to check if this electrified pickup truck is the real deal.</p><div><strong>What is it?</strong></div><p>The Nevo Hunter K50 is a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) and plug-in hybrid from the Chinese automaker Changan. We were handed the keys to the top-spec 4x4 Knight, which boasts 268hp and 470Nm of torque. Power comes from dual electric motors with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine acting as a generator.</p><p>REEVs are hybrids that rely solely on electric motors to move the vehicle, with a gasoline engine only acting as a generator to charge the electric motors. Traditional hybrids, on the other hand, use both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor to propel the vehicle.</p><p>In terms of range, Changan says the Hunter will do 180 kilometers in full EV mode and a combined range of 1031 kilometers on a full tank of gas.</p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:950px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751607241038Changan-2.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The Changan Nevo Hunter K50 is a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) and plug-in hybrid. <em>JC Gonzales, ABS-CBN News </em></span></span></span></div><div><strong>How does it look?<br/></strong></div><p>The Hunter K50 is big and burly just as you would expect from a modern pickup truck, and yet, it doesn’t look like anything you’ve seen before. Instead of rounded corners, you get sharp angles, lots of them. The huge mesh-type grill dominates the front, with sleek daytime running lights and headlamps framing its muscular build. </p><p>The contemporary design of the Hunter K50 is quite striking, especially in this Olive Green color. I can tell you from experience that this truck gets quite a bit of attention from fellow drivers and pedestrians alike.</p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:950px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751607088378Changan-8.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The Hunter gets a lot of attention on the road.</span></span></span></div><p>It&#x27;s equipped with 18-inch gloss black wheels, black body cladding, roof rails, and running boards, which add to its aggressive look. There’s less drama in the back looks-wise, but it does come with a neat feature where the tailgate doubles as a step board, making it easier to access the cargo bed.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751607137837Changan-6.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751607164237Changan-rear.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>The Interior</strong></div><p>Inside, the Hunter K50 impresses with its modern minimalist design and choice of materials.</p><p>The cabin features leather and soft-touch materials and a mix of different finishes for its plastic trim. The brushed finish that runs along the dash looks particularly premium. There’s also red stitching on the leather seats and other parts of the cabin which elevates the overall feel of the interior.</p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:950px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751607413456Changan Interior 1.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The brushed finish on the dash is a nice touch. The screen is sharp and fairly responsive, which helps because you’ll fiddle with a lot of the car’s settings using the screen. The system also features Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. </p><p>Though during testing, I ran into some problems connecting both my iPhone and Android phones. I resorted to using the wired connection instead.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751608420009Changan Interior 2.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><div><br/></div><p>The driver also gets a 7.5-inch digital instrument cluster which shows all your essentials: Fuel, temperature, battery charge remaining, tire pressure information among other things.</p><div><strong>How does it drive?</strong></div><p>Having mainly driven internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in the past, driving an electrified vehicle is a revelation. The instant torque is seriously addicting. There’s a disconnect between how fast and quietly this big pickup truck can accelerate off the line in pure EV mode. Also, I was bracing for noise and vibrations that never came. The initial experience almost felt surreal.</p><p>After a few more stabs at the gas pedal, I finally got used to driving the Hunter.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751608510072Changan-9.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><br/></div><p>Changan classifies this as a “lifestyle pickup truck” and it certainly drives like one. Around town, it behaves more like an SUV with its quiet interior and comfortable ride.</p><p>Having said that, the suspension feels a tad too soft as braking situations will often rock you and your passengers forward.</p><p>On longer drives, the Hunter K50 retains its “lifestyle truck” demeanor, remaining calm and composed on the South Luzon Expressway. I do have to note that the calmness inside the cabin was frequently interrupted by the overly eager Lane Departure Warning system. I decided to turn it off altogether for the remainder of the trip.</p><p>Should you need to overtake, a gentle nudge on the gas pedal is all it really takes to give the car in front a view of your rear instead. During overtaking is when you’ll usually hear the gasoline engine power to a hum. You will notice it but it never gets too distracting.</p><p>The suspension got a tough workout, no thanks to the Star Tollway’s deceivingly smooth roads (IYKYK). It did its best, though in all fairness, nothing can ever tame those roads short of riding a flying car over them.</p><p>During testing, I averaged 11.5 kilometers per liter of gasoline and 20.9kWh/100km in electric mode, driving a total of 340 kilometers in mixed driving conditions. That’s pretty respectable considering how heavy I was on the gas pedal and how often I was stuck in traffic (not to mention a couple of times I had the truck parked and the engine running while I took pictures.)</p><p>With its claimed 180km range in pure EV mode, you’ll truly get your money’s worth if you only drive short distances daily, say 40 to 50 kilometers. Technically, you wouldn’t need to gas up and rely purely on electric charging instead.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1751608579730Changan-4.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><br/></div><p>The Hunter K50 also comes with safety features like Lane Departure Warning, Electronic Parking Brake, Parking Sensors, 540° View Camera, 360° dashcam, Anti-lock Braking System, Traction Control System, Brake Assist, Hill Hold and Hill Descent Control, Cruise Control.</p><div><strong>Conclusion</strong></div><p>Chinese car manufacturers have come a long way from producing lower-quality vehicles to becoming major players in the global automotive industry, particularly in the electric and hybrid market.
