Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><p>BERLIN — IFA is Europe’s biggest tech show, and every year some of the biggest names in the tech industry come to Berlin to display some of their latest innovations and services.</p><div><strong>AI everywhere plus robots<br/></strong></div><p>This year again saw brands and gadget manufacturers tout using AI in their products. From robot vacuums to washing machines and even refrigerators, practically everyone was saying their devices were powered by AI.</p><p>One interesting display was of a prototype humanoid robot from Neura Robotics that looked straight out of Hollywood. According to Neura, its 4NE1 is engineered to move with human-like fluidity, perceive its surroundings with precision, and collaborate seamlessly with people.</p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757413029562neura robot.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="The Neura 4NE1 humanoid robot sorts colored and white laundry. In front of the robot was a pile of laundry with the whites and the colored clothes all thrown together. The robot was shown trying to pick the white from the colored clothes and placing them in separate bins.</p><p>It would have been a neat trick if only the robot hadn’t been doing this at a glacial pace. It’s just a prototype, but hopefully its developers will be able to work faster than the robot was.  </p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757413112744AI ref.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="AI find its way even into appliances like washing machines. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><p>But everywhere you looked, every device manufacturer was touting their use of AI. Korean electronics giant LG had AI on its refs, washing machines and other home appliances. It’s just like a few years ago when IOT, or the internet of things, was such a big deal, and everyone was rushing to put an IP address and a Wi-Fi chip on everything from kettles to TVs.</p><div><strong>MiniLEDS, paperlike screens, 3D displays<br/></strong></div><p>Speaking of TVs, a lot of TV manufacturers were present at IFA displaying their latest miniLED and micro LED offerings. The screens were just amazing–deep blacks, colors that pop out of the screen, simply the sharpest and clearest images I’ve seen so far on screens that were 80 or even other 100 inches across. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News </span></span></span></div><p>Also notable were the TCL NXTWEAR G smart glasses, which the company said deliver an immersive 140-inch screen. I got to try this and it was akin to sitting in a huge cinema. </p><p>Another display tech that caught my attention was TCL’s phones and tablets that use the company’s ‘NEXTPAPER’ displays. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>While we all love our phones’ bright and crisp OLED screens, they have a tendency to reflect glare as well as put strain on the eyes, which is why e-book readers use e-paper. An old challenge for e-paper or e-ink displays was their relatively slow response times compared to LCDs and OLEDs. But TCL seems to have solved this problem as its NXTPAPER 60 Ultra claims a 120Hz refresh rate for its 1080 x 2340.</p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757414203013tcl phone.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="TCL&#x27;s midrange phone uses the company&#x27;s NXTPAPER screen which mimics the qualities of printed paper. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>The phone’s 7.2-inch  screen has a 263 ppi pixel density might seem paltry compared to other phones, as even the midrange HONOR 400’s 1264 x 2736 reaches 460 ppi. But this is made up for by the unique quality of the display–an image on it looks practically like it was printed on paper. Graphics pros know that on paper, a 300 dpi image is already considered high resolution. While 263 ppi is still a bit off the standard used by the pros for printing, it’s close enough. </p><p>TCL’s NXTPAPER phones can also switch to a monochrome mode for reading long text, which also happens to use less power.</p><p>In the Philippines, TCL is known more for its TVs, and the brand still has only a tiny footprint in the mobile phone market. Acer again showed its glasses-free SpatialLabs 3D display during its exclusive media event ahead of the formal opening of IFA. But this time, Acer paired its 3D displays with stereoscopic cameras that mimic human binocular vision. While stereo cameras have been around for years now, it was interesting to see them paired with 3D displays.  </p><p>A very interesting use case for the 3D screen was in surgery and surgical training. Acer showed 3D footage of an actual surgery. According to the company, this tech lets medical professionals view high-resolution surgical footage with enhanced depth and spatial clarity, without the need for headsets or specialized eyewear. </p><div><strong>Electric motorcycles</strong></div><p>Personal mobility was another big thing at IFA, with various OEMs and brands displaying their latest e-bikes, e-scooters and even electric minicars. Acer showed off an even more rugged-looking version of its Predator e-bike, which it first unveiled at Computex. Personally, I think it looks really good, but it still has an identity crisis as it doesn’t seem to know whether it wants to be an ebike or e-motorcycle. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d like to see it ditch the bike pedals for a cleaner, moto-look. </p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757415111701e-cruiser.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="The Romo SK01 Furiosa electric cruiser. Arthur Fuentes, ABS-CBN News</span></span></span></div><p>One of the most eye-catching personal mobility devices at IFA meanwhile, was a chrome-plated electric motorcycle complete with a mock V-twin “engine.” The ROMO SK01 Furiosa Le claims a top speed of roughly 85 kilometers per hour, up to 190 newton-meters of torque, and a range of 60 to 120 kilometers, which should make it a pretty good city commuter. As an avid motorcyclist whose first bike was a cruiser, this EV really spoke to me. This should have been the bike that Harley-Davidson made when it first forayed into EVs. </p><div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757415185598e-street bike.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="The yadea Keeness electric motorcycle. The Yadea Keeness which has a claimed top speed of 100 km/h and 280 N-m of torque. This street bike can also go from 0-50 km/h in 4 seconds. While these are not exactly numbers that would impress a petrolhead, they point to a progress in the EV world. Another tech innovation from Yadea are the dual 72 V 32 Ah lithium batteries, which can be removed for charging.  </p><p>Another innovation that’s supposedly set to be rolled out in Berlin and Amsterdam is a battery swapping system for e-bikes by Enyring. The system promises a string of battery swapping stations in these cities to alleviate range anxiety among ebike users.</p><p>IFA ran from Sept. 5-9 in Berlin.</p>
