MANILA -- Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda has called out YouTube for not directly coordinating with the government regarding safety protocols and misinformation.At the Digital Bayanihan Safety Summit in Manila, Aguda thanked social media platforms Meta and TikTok for cooperating with the DICT. Then ako I’ve always been trying to reach out to platforms na ‘o usap naman tayo.’ For some reason hindi pa rin nakikipag-ugnayan si YouTube sa atin,” Aguda said.He added that YouTube needs to coordinate with the government on safety protocols as well as on the fight against misinformation and disinformation. Aguda said TikTok and Meta have submitted their content moderation systems and how issues can be addressed, but not YouTube.“Dapat higpitan pag-post ng mga fake news. Kasi maraming yung mga deepfake ngayon lalo na mga video,” he added.Aguda clarified that YouTube parent Google has been in contact with them, but he wants a more direct line to YouTube since talking to a middleman takes a long time.He added that, like what happened with <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/14/roblox-to-introduce-roblox-kids-roblox-select-to-protect-children-1755" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Roblox</a> and <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/technology/2026/2/26/telegram-under-observation-by-dict-cicc-1025" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Telegram</a>, they coordinated with the DICT and both have improved their safety protocols.Google Government Affairs and Public Policy Lead Arianne Santoso, who joined the DICT summit, reiterated the company’s coordination with government agencies. She added that YouTube has safety policies and strict guidelines.“On YouTube, for instance, we already have extensive community guidelines around misinformation, impersonation and ranging from [other] topics as well, cyberbullying,” Santoso said at the forum.She also told Aguda she will bring up the issue to YouTube representatives. A DICT-YouTube meeting is now a possibility.Aguda added there is no plan to issue a warning to YouTube, but hopes the company can coordinate with them soon.“Ang platform itself ayaw natin masuspend kasi pag sinuspend mo yan, mawawala pati the good that it does,” he added.The DICT now hopes all social media platforms can implement safety protocols and content moderation systems to protect Filipinos. He also supports proposals to set an age requirement in social media usage and for these companies to set up an office in the Philippines.
