MANILA - Parts of the Philippines are expected to see rain on the first day of 2025 due to different weather systems, particularly the shear line and the intertropical convergence zone, weather bureau Pagasa said on Wednesday.

Pagasa weather forecaster Benison Estareja said parts of Northern Luzon will experience rains due to the amihan. The Ilocos region is seen to have cloudy skies.  Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms can be expected in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces, especially in CALABARZON and MIMAROPA.

Meanwhile, the shear line, which refers to the collision of the cold amihan winds from Northern Asia with the warm easterlies from the Pacific, will cause moderate to heavy rainfall in the Eastern parts of the Philippines.

Rainfall of between 50-100 mm can be expected in the provinces of Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte, Pagasa said.

The intertropical convergence zone, which refers to the meeting of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, will also bring rains to parts of Mindanao.

Estareja said no tropical cyclones are expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility this week, but a cyclone can still be expected this month. If a storm enters the Philippines, it will be named Auring and is likely to make landfall somewhere in the Visayas or Mindanao.

Temperatures in Metro Manila will range from 24 degrees Celsius to 30°C. Tagaytay's temperature will be much cooler ranging from 29°C to 22°C, while Baguio can expect some of the coldest temperatures today ranging from 24°C to 17°C.

Rainfall may be heavier in mountainous and elevated areas, and impact may be worsened in some areas that have already experienced heavy rains, Pagasa said.
