MANILA — More areas were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 as Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) intensified into a typhoon on Friday night. State weather bureau PAGASA said Uwan entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late Friday.In its 11 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Uwan was last located 1,045 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour near the center, with gusts of up to 150 kph. It is moving west northwestward at 20 kph.Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 was hoisted over the following areas:<ul><li>eastern portion of Isabela</li><li>eastern and southern portions of Quirino </li><li>southeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya </li><li>Aurora</li><li>southeastern portion of Rizal </li><li>eastern and southern portions of Quezon including Polillo Islands</li><li>Romblon</li><li>Marinduque</li><li>Camarines Norte</li><li>Camarines Sur</li><li>Albay</li><li>Catanduanes</li><li>Sorsogon</li><li>Masbate including Ticao and  Burias Islands</li><li>Northern Samar</li><li>Eastern Samar</li><li>Samar</li><li>Biliran</li><li>Leyte</li><li>Southern Leyte</li><li>northern and central portions of Cebu, including Bantayan and Camotes Islands</li><li>northeastern portion of Bohol</li><li>northern portion of Negros Occidental</li><li>northern portion of Iloilo</li><li>northeastern and western portions of Capiz</li><li>Aklan</li><li>Dinagat Islands</li><li>Surigao del Norte</li></ul>Higher wind warnings will be issued as Uwan draws closer to land.It may rapidly intensify up to super typhoon strength by late Saturday or early Sunday, hence Signal no. 5 will be the highest wind warning to be raised.Uwan may make landfall over southern Isabela or northern Aurora at or near peak intensity late Sunday or early Monday, according to PAGASA.It will then cross Northern Luzon and emerge over the West Philippine Sea late morning or in the afternoon.The mountainous terrain of Luzon will significantly weaken Uwan, but it will remain a typhoon during its passage.Uwan will bring significant rainfall in Luzon and Visayas during its passage. Up to torrential rains may be expected over most of Bicol from Saturday evening to Sunday evening and over Northern and Central Luzon Sunday evening to Monday evening.Widespread and serious flooding and landslides are expected in these areas.Uwan is expected to bring around 200 millimeters of rainfall over Camarines Sur, Catanduanes and Albay from Saturday afternoon to Sunday. Heavy rains are also expected in Cagaya, Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Samar and Eastern Samar from Saturday afternoon.PAGASA warned of severe flooding and landslides in highly vulnerable areas<div>‘CATASTROPHIC THREAT’ TO AURORA: JMA</div>According to Japan Meteorological Agency, Fung-Wong is currently undergoing rapid intensification and is forecast to reach “very strong typhoon” intensity by Saturday night.JMA warned of “catastrophic threat” to Aurora and the neighboring provinces of Central and Northern Luzon.“Its large size will cause destructive winds and widespread, intense rainfall across a vast area of the island,” it added.JMA warned of devastating winds and torrential rainfall in Aurora, northern Quezon and southern Isabela from Sunday night through Monday morning.Central Luzon and Cordillera Administrative Region may also experience strong winds, torrential rainfall, and severe flooding/landslides from Sunday night, while Ilocos Region and Pangasinan may experience strong to gale-force winds, wil heavy to intense rains by Monday, JMA said.The Bicol Region may likewise experience strong to severe winds and heavy rainfall beginning Saturday evening.Uwan&#x27;s circulation is also expected to enhance the northeast monsoon or amihan and may intensify rainfall over the eastern seaboard and mountainous areas of Luzon, including the Sierra Madre mountains, JMA also said.
