Peru was hit by widespread flooding after heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, affecting several towns across the country, and prompting the deployment of government rescue teams to the worst-hit areas in departments such as Ucayali and Piura.

Rescue teams delivered food and helped install sandbags around homes to prevent further water ingress.

"We woke at 1 in the morning, the water was already there, it was already flooded," Atalaya resident Armando Gonzalez said.

Local media reported that an assessment of the damage will be conducted once the water levels recede in the coming days.
