Motorists and pedestrians are caught in a sudden downpour in Quezon City on June 6, 2025.  Weather bureau PAGASA issued a Yellow rainfall warning in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon on Friday afternoon.

Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File"/>Motorists and pedestrians are caught in a sudden downpour in Quezon City on June 6, 2025.  Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/File</div>MANILA (UPDATED) -- The southwest monsoon or Habagat has returned after a week-long monsoon break and is now bringing widespread rains across several parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, according to the state weather bureau PAGASA. Veronica Torres, PAGASA weather specialist, said during an interview that Saturday’s sudden heavy downpour in Metro Manila was initially caused by localized thunderstorms, compounded by the early effects of the southwest monsoon gradually making its way back. “Actually, yesterday sa Metro Manila, iyong weather system kasi na inaasahan natin is more on easterlies o hindi kaya localized thunderstorms. So, kahit mga localized thunderstorms, pwede pa rin magdala ng mga flash flood, lalo na kapag hindi maganda iyong drainage system sa isang lugar,” said Torres. She noted that thunderstorms can last anywhere between 30 minutes to as long as two to three hours during severe episodes and added that the monsoon is already making an impact in various regions. <div><a class="fr-green" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/weather-traffic/2025/6/21/floods-swamp-several-roads-in-metro-manila-amid-heavy-downpour-1835">Floods swamp several roads in Metro Manila amid heavy downpour</a> </div>“Mas maraming area na ngayon iyong affected ng habagat o southwest monsoon. Nakikita natin na kahit dito sa Metro Manila ay sa public weather forecast natin, nakikita natin iyong maulap na papawirin at mga kalat-kalat na pag-ulan, pag-kidlat at pag-kulog,” Torres explained.In a thunderstorm advisory issued by PAGASA on Sunday afternoon, it warned of heavy to intense rain showers, lightning, and strong winds over Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Pampanga, Metro Manila, Quezon Province, Rizal, Laguna, Batangas, Cavite, and Zambales, with the potential to trigger flash floods and landslides. Aside from Metro Manila, the state weather bureau identified the western sections of Luzon and Visayas as areas that will likely experience persistent rainfall in the coming days. Meanwhile, a low pressure area that is being monitored outside of the Philippine Area of Responsibility has developed into a tropical depression as of 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.Torres also noted that data suggests a possible tropical vortex northeast of the country. “Base nga rin sa ating tropical cyclone threat potential forecast, may possible na vortex na mabuo sa may bandang northeast ng bansa natin. Also, lagi pa rin nga tayo magdadala ng payong in case na magkakaroon nga ng mga biglaang pag-ulan lalo na sa hapon,” Torres advised.
