MANILA -- The state weather bureau PAGASA on Wednesday warned that while Tropical Depression “Crising” continues to move closer to Northern Luzon and intensifies the southwest monsoon or habagat, there is also a possibility that another tropical cyclone or low-pressure area could develop within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in the coming days.

Engr. Christopher Perez, PAGASA’s Assistant Weather Services Chief, said that as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the center of “Crising” was still far from land, spotted some 625 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes.

It packs maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts up to 55 kph, moving west-southwest at 20 kph.

“Bagamat malayo pa ang bagyong si Crising sa ating bansa, patuloy na itong nagpapaibayo ng habagat or southwest monsoon. Kaya kung mapapansin po natin, maging dito sa western seaboard ng ating bansa ay makapal ang kaulapan,” Perez said.

PAGASA expects that “Crising” could reach severe tropical storm category as it nears Northern Luzon by Friday night until early Saturday, possibly making landfall over mainland Cagayan or the Babuyan Islands.

Forecast rainfall of 100-200 millimeters is expected over Northern Luzon provinces such as Ilocos Norte, Apayao, and Cagayan from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.

Similar heavy rains may also drench Zambales, Occidental Mindoro, and Antique, heightening risks of floods and landslides. The intensified habagat will continue to dump rains over parts of Palawan, Western Visayas, and Zamboanga Peninsula in the next days.

In terms of winds, Perez said strong to gale-force gusts may be felt in several areas, gradually extending to Metro Manila and more parts of Luzon and Visayas by Friday.

Meanwhile, PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel Servando responded to a question from the press on whether another weather disturbance could form soon after “Crising,” saying there is indeed such a possibility.

“Base sa current tropical cyclone potentials na pinalabas ng PAGASA, right now, may possibility na after Crising, ay may isa pang susunod na bagyo-like na vortex. Potensyal na maging isang bagyo,” Servando said.

He added that this system may still affect the same general areas in Northern Luzon if it develops.

PAGASA assured that updates will be provided as conditions change.

“But of course, nag-issue kami ng updates at kung ano man ang mga changes ay kaagad naman ibigay namin,” Servando addedd.

PAGASA urged the public, especially residents in Northern Luzon, to remain alert for tropical cyclone bulletins and local heavy rainfall or thunderstorm advisories.
