Torrential monsoon rains triggered knee to waist-deep flooding across parts of the Philippines on Tuesday (July 22), including in the capital region, forcing a second day of school closures, flight cancellations, and suspension of government work.

In the Philippine capital Manila and nearby provinces, residents waded through knee-deep floodwaters, while those living near the rivers and waterways were evacuated overnight due to the floods.

Jubert Camiloza, 37, was among the residents living along one of the rivers in Manila who were evacuated when floodwaters reached their two-story home. He and his family evacuated to a church which was turned into a temporary shelter  while they waited for the floods to subside.

According to the national disaster agency, thousands of families remained in evacuation centers as relentless rains, intensified by Tropical Storm Crising, which swept through the country's north last week, continued to batter the country.

Forecasters detected two new low-pressure areas, threatening to bring more rain to already soaked regions.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., currently on an official visit to the United States, assured the public that government agencies have been mobilized to provide assistance.
