<p>MANILA — Traveling to Metro Manila from Laguna just got easier with the opening of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) San Pedro Northbound Exit on Friday, August 1.</p><p>According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), about 5,000 to 10,000 motorists a day are expected to benefit from new toll exit, which is seen to reduce the travel time going to Manila by 45 minutes.</p><p>Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said at the inauguration ceremony that the new exit will save motorists from having to go to Biñan to head north to Manila.</p><p>Laguna 1st District Rep. Ann Matibag said this will also be good for the province’s tourism.</p><p>She said thousands come to San Pedro during Holy Week for &quot;Lolo Uweng&quot; at the Shrine of Jesus in the Holy Sepulchre.</p><p>“(But) when it comes to traffic, usually the tourists from Manila would just go sa Bulacan kasi mas mabilis doon.&quot;</p><p>She said that the new exit and  the Cavite-Laguna Expressway will make it easier to get to and from Sen Pedro.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RIGHT-OF-WAY, FLOODING ADDRESSED </strong></div><p>Construction for the 2.3-kilometer-long interchange started in July 2018 with an initial budget of around P600 million. </p><p>But right-of-way issues led to delays in implementation, hiking the total project cost to P915 million.</p><p>Public Works Secretary Manuel Bonoan said relocating informal settler communities in the interchange&#x27;s path also took time.</p><p>Now that it’s open, Bonoan believes flooding will not be a problem along the toll road. He said the DPWH and San Miguel Corp. have also taken measures to address the flooding problem in nearby areas.</p><p>&quot;At saka meron din kaming alternate drainage na nilagay so nagco-complement yung ginawa ng San Miguel Corporation at DPWH,&quot; he said.</p><p>(We also put up alternate drainage, so the measures complement each other)</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>TOLL INTEROPERABILITY</strong></div><p>Meanwhile, Dizon said the DOTr has given tollway concessionaires until early next year to roll out a unified collection system, or the so-called electronic toll collection (ETC) interoperability.</p><p>“Dapat maayos na natin yung interoperability ng dalawa, na hindi kailangan dalawang magkahiwalay na RFID sticker para sa magkaibang portions ng ating mga highway,” he said.</p><p>(We need to fix interoperability so you won&#x27;t need separate RFID stickers for different portions of the highway)</p><p>Only then can they move forward to going 100-percent cashless, he said.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/2/21/new-dotr-secretary-suspends-cashless-toll-collection-1235"><strong>New DOTr secretary suspends &#x27;cashless-only&#x27; toll collection policy<br/></strong></a></div><p>He also emphasized the need to fix the “basic issues” like boom barriers at toll plazas not raising automatically.</p>
