Japanese rickshaw pullers battle blazing heat in Kyoto

In Kyoto’s touristic Arashiyama district, rickshaw drivers carry a mix of tourists and locals through narrow alleyways, the iconic bamboo forest and past centuries-old temples that define the historic landscape.In addition to the physical demands of the job, Daisuke Nakayama is among the determined rickshaw pullers who now face an increasingly serious challenge: the unrelenting heatwaves of summer.In recent weeks, temperatures in the region soared to a record 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit), with daily conditions often hovering around 38 to 39 degrees Celsius. Despite the gruelling heat, the drivers continue their work, pulling heavy carts through the sunbaked streets.“It’s indeed very tough to deal with the heat. When I was younger, I didn’t think the heat was all that bad. In fact, I used to dislike the cold weather. But as I’ve gotten older, I just can’t stand this kind of heat anymore. And on top of that, the hot season gets longer so it really takes a toll on me,” said the 56 year-old who started the job nearly three decades ago.The veteran driver has developed a tough mentality and strategies to cope with the extreme heat - staying hydrated, taking short breaks between rides, and ensuring they eat and sleep properly.Nakayama admits there were moments when he thought about stepping away from the job.“There were times I felt like quitting. It is really tough. You have to be very self-disciplined both physically and mentally,” said Nakayama. But he believes the work remains deeply rewarding, and hopes to continue carrying more visitors both domestic and from abroad, to appreciate the rich history and culture woven into the journey on his rickshaw through Arashiyama’s scenic paths. (Production: Fred Mery, Irene Wang)
