3-meter storm surges threaten Batanes, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte

Weather bureau PAGASA on Monday warned of a high risk of life-threatening storm surges within the next 24 hours in several areas affected by Super Typhoon Nando.Storm surges of more than 3 meters are possible in Batanes including Basco, Itbayat, Ivana, Mahatao, Sabtang, Uyugan; Cagayan including Abulug, Aparri, Ballesteros, Buguey, Calayan, Claveria, Gonzaga, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Ana, Santa Praxedes, Santa Teresita; and Ilocos Norte including Bangui, Burgos and Pagudpud.PAGASA warned the storm surges could cause significant damage to communities, coastal/marine infrastructure and disruptions to all marine-related activities. It advised residents to evacuate, cancel all marine activities and move to higher ground away from the coast and storm surge-prone areas,Storm surges of 2.1 meters to 3 meters are possible in Cagayan incuding Baggao, Gattaran, Lal-Lo and Penablanca; Ilocos Norte including Bacarra, Badoc, Currimao, Laoag City, Paoay and Pasuquin; and Ilocos Sur including Cabugao and Sinait.  Storm surges of 1-2 meters may affect Caoayan, Magsingal, Narvacan, San Juan Lapog and San Vicente in Ilocos Sur.As of 7 a.m., the center of the eye of Super Typhoon Nando was estimated based on all available data including from Aparri Doppler Weather Radar at 180 km East of Calayan, Cagayan.
