Dozens of protesters, many clad in inflatable costumes, faced off with police outside the local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Portland, Oregon on Saturday (October 11) evening, as they continued to demonstrate against U.S. President Donald Trump&#x27;s mass deportation policies.Although protests in Portland have largely been confined to the city’s ICE facility for the past few weeks, Trump has described the city as a full-blown “war zone”, threatening to send National Guard soldiers to restore order. A federal judge in Oregon recently blocked Trump’s attempt to deploy troops, though another appellate court appeared poised to overrule that decision during arguments earlier this week.On Saturday evening, protesters donning costumes ranging from Pikachu to the Philadelphia Flyers mascot gathered outside the entrance of the ICE facility, facing occasional arrests and firing of pepper balls by police.Adam, who has been attending the demonstrations regularly, said his costume—a banana—is his response to Trump’s claims that his city is “war-torn”. “I’m here tonight because this is literally, actually bananas. Like, we have these guys (police) in full military uniforms, costumes basically, coming out because the President of the United States, the highest office that we used to all have respect for, is saying that this is a ‘war-torn, blown out buildings (city),’” said Adam, a Portland resident who would only give his first name.The Democratic governor of Oregon has accused Trump of deliberately mischaracterizing small, mostly peaceful protests as violent and dangerous in order to justify National Guard deployments. Trump has threatened to expand his campaign to other Democratic-led cities, after sending Guard troops this year to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., despite objections from their mayors.(Production: Joseph Campbell)
