Aerial assaults and magnificent leaps in El Nido…

There’s a new sport in town with the debut of the 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series on ABS-CBN S+A this Sunday (April 21) at 6 pm, featuring action from the tournament’s opening leg held in the country recently.

Twenty-three of the sport's best athletes from 18 countries leapt, twisted, and somersaulted from breath-taking heights in El Nido, Palawan to start the 11th season of the competition. Defending champion Gary Hunt, who has won seven times in the competition, emerged atop the pack with 427.25 points. His stiffest competition in the Men’s Division are Constantin Popovici from Romania who tallied 409.4 points, and Jonathan Paredes of Mexico, who is currently at third with 408.05 points.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s World Series, Australian Rhiannan Iffland looked ready to extend her reign as queen of the dives with 329.25 points followed by Yana Nestsiarava of Belarus at second place with 319.35 points, and Lysanne Richard of Canada with 309.7 points. Filipinos were able to watch the action live via livestreaming on iWant Sports.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series was established in 2009 to provide a platform for the world’s finest divers to showcase their aesthetic free-falls and dives of ever-growing complexity. Dives are scored by international judges based on the takeoff, position in the air, and entry in the water. Its success led to the introduction of a Women’s World Series in 2014. The competition now heads to Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Lebanon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Spain for six more legs of this season’s world series. Action from Palawan was streamed live on iWant Sports, the sports section of ABS-CBN’s streaming service.

Witness the concentration, skill, and physical control of the world’s best divers as they show off their grace, athleticism, and creativity with majestic views of El Nido in the background in the first leg of the 2019 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series on ABS-CBN S+A this Sunday (April 21) at 6 pm.
