Parts of Shanghai looked like a scene from a dystopian movie, after photographs taken on Saturday showed the city’s streets and a mall virtually empty.

Robert Ang, a Chinese citizen living in the Philippines who went to Shanghai for the Chinese New Year, submitted these photos he took as he was going to his office.

Shanghai has been forced to restrict city operations as a response to the growing threat of the 2019 novel coronavirus in China.

According to a CNBC report, the city government ordered companies not to resume work until Feb. 3, Monday. Disney also closed its local resort.

A number of international flights with a Shanghai route have been suspended, too.

The number of deaths from a coronavirus epidemic in China has risen by 46 to 259, the country's health authority said on Saturday, as the United States and other nations announced new border curbs on foreigners who have been in China.

In its latest figures, China's National Health Commission said there were 2,102 new confirmed infections in China on Friday, bringing the cumulative total to 11,791. Around two dozen other countries have reported another 137 cases.
